Lucien didn’t notice Calista’s figure upstairs. He remained as composed as ever. 

“The Fenwick Group’s name cannot be tarnished. Calista is still part of the Fenwick family, so no matter what she’s done, I’ll take care of it. You don’t need to get involved.” 

Only then did he notice the abandoned fried egg in the pan. It was completely blackened, mirroring his current mood. 

Hearing his words, Wendy let out a sigh of relief. 

The two of them continued talking downstairs, but Calista no longer bothered listening. Her heart had taken yet another heavy blow. 

Back in her room, she delivered a hard slap across her face, the sharp pain bringing her a moment of clarity. 

“Calista, you really are pathetic,” Calista muttered under her breath, no longer daring to hold on to even the slightest shred of hope. 

Ten minutes later, she came back downstairs, her face drained of color. 

Wendy was nowhere to be seen, and Lucien was already waiting by the door. 

“My tie,” Lucien said, not moving an inch. 

Calista walked over with the wrinkled tie in her hands. 

Just as she was about to help him put it on, she realized that she’d scrunched it up in her grip. Compared to Lucien, who was impeccably dressed from head–to–toe, it looked completely out of place. 

But Lucien didn’t seem to mind. He simply took the tie, looped it around his collar, and strode out of the door. 

With her face ashen, Calista walked over to the window and peeked out.

Another nurse held Calista back and said in a mocking tone, “Dr. Lester is in the director’s office, taking the blame for you. 

“Ms. Marchand, I hear you’ve married into quite the wealthy family. With your prestigious status, why bother working here and making a mess of things? Thanks to you, Dr. Lester is getting scolded by our director.” 

Alexander was well–liked at the hospital, so it was no surprise that others stood up for him when he was wrongly accused of something. 

Calista was at a loss for words. After muttering an apology, she hurried to the director’s office. 

Just as she reached the door, she heard a deep and commanding voice ring out from inside. It was the voice of the hospital director, Cassius Manings. 

“Do you realize that you were nearly reported?” 

Cassius was clearly shaken. After all, Alexander played a pivotal role in his appointment as director. If anything were to go wrong now, all his previous efforts would be in vain.
