Calista looked at them coldly.
She had always known that Ophelia was beautiful. At work, she carried a cool and collected demeanor. But now, without any embellishment, she looked almost ethereal.
It was no wonder Lucien had fallen for her. Now that Calista thought about it, it truly was no surprise.
“There wasn’t much of a problem at first, but someone accidentally pushed me into the flowerbed, and now…” Ophelia hadn’t meant to sound like she was tattling, but being pushed into a flowerbed out of nowhere left her feeling a little resentful.
Lucien’s expression shifted. He hadn’t quite grasped what Ophelia was implying when Astrid jumped in and started complaining.
Only then did Lucien notice Calista, standing quietly in the corner of the room.
“What are you doing here?” he asked.
Calista sighed. “I’m here to take care of my sister. Is there a problem? Or do you not trust me to do even that?”
“Calista, how could you say that? You clearly weren’t being careful. It was such a steep fall. Did you push Elia on purpose?”
Astrid didn’t sound like she was blaming Calista. She just seemed shaken by what happened to Ophelia. And because of that, her words
sounded quite beljevable.
“What exactly happened?” Lucien didn’t look at anyone else. His gaze was fixed on Calista.
a lowered her gaze, as if deliberately avoiding his.
“It was my mistake.”
Hearing her just take the blame without trying to explain herself, Lucien’s expression darkened. Before he could say anything, Astrid
burst into a sob.
“Cali, Elia has always given in to you. How could you do something so cruel to her? You’re not a child anymore. How could you not know how dangerous that spot was?”
Perhaps this was what people meant by physiological disgust.
Lucien noticed her reaction, and his voice turned cold. “Why were you with Ophelia?”
Calista straightened her back and faced him. “Shouldn’t I be asking you that? What are you doing here at the hospital? If you’re here to see Ophelia, then don’t waste your time here with me.”
She continued, “If you’re here to defend her and punish me, then fine. As long as you don’t touch Anthony and Rebecca, I’ll do whatever you want.”
She couldn’t deny it. It really was her fault this time.
Calista’s voice held a seriousness that Lucien had never heard before. In the past, no matter the situation, she would always face him with a smile. Her voice had always been soft and laced with affection.
But this version of Calista was one he had never seen before–and he didn’t like it one bit.
“Idiot!” he snapped. Without saying another word, he walked away briskly, clearly infuriated by Calista’s cold attitude.
