Darren remembered Lena was still at the hospital, so he decided to head over.
“I’m going to the hospital now.”
…
At the hospital, Xena had just dropped off some tea for Lena in her room and was now muttering curses under her breath in the restroom.
“Such a princess! Just a little stress-induced nosebleed, and she insists on staying in the VIP critical care suite—treats me like I’m her maid…”
As she stepped out of the restroom, her eyes caught a familiar figure down the hall.
It was Darren.
She hurried after him, ready to put on her most pitiful face, but then heard the person beside him say, “Mr. Harrington, the paternity test results you requested are in the records office. I’ll take you there.”
“No rush. I want to check on my sister first.”
Darren said this and walked off in the direction of Lena’s room.
All the color drained from Xena’s face.
Paternity test? Was Darren secretly investigating her and that deadbeat gambler who’d crashed the wedding?
She spun on her heel and practically ran to the records office.
…
A short while later, inside the records office.
Darren tore open the sealed envelope and pulled out the report, eyes scanning straight to the conclusion: **Not a biological match.**
His hand clenched tight around the report.
A wave of guilt swept over him.
He never should have listened to Charlotte. If Xena ever found out he doubted her, how devastated would she be?
“Charlotte…”
Darren’s expression darkened.
That conniving woman—has she ever told the truth about anything?
If he ever trusted her again, he’d have to be out of his mind.
Xena’s shock was palpable. “Noah? What are you doing in here?”
Noah shrank back, stammering, “X-Xena… I… I didn’t mean to… I just wanted to play hide and seek with you, so I hid here…”
He never expected that, by hiding here, he’d overhear Xena calling the housekeeper “Mom”—and worse, their plan to drug his dad tonight!
His mind reeled in panic, leaving only raw fear.
Xena knelt in front of Noah, forcing a gentle smile. “Noah, you know how much I like you. But it seems like you heard something you shouldn’t have, didn’t you?”
Noah’s eyes darted, desperate to escape, but a strong hand yanked him back before he could move.
One woman clamped a hand over Noah’s mouth, while the other hoisted him up—
And together, they shoved him out the third-floor window.
Bang!
A tremendous crash split the midnight silence at Harrington Manor.
Back at the hospital, Darren’s phone rang. Xena’s voice quivered on the other end: “Darren, something terrible’s happened! Noah jumped out the window!”
