Chapter 5
“You’re such a bitch. If Mr. Shaw doesn’t deserve Ivy, then who does?” Charlotte spat, her eyes blazing with scorn as she scrutinized me from head to toe. “Look at you! You can barely manage your own life, let alone take care of Mr. Shaw’s daughter.”
Before I could even open my mouth to reply, Sebastian’s voice cut through the tension, calm but sharp. “You want Ivy? Fine. But first, prove you’re capable of supporting her. Otherwise, what if you just sell her off to some forgotten place and vanish again?”
Charlotte smirked triumphantly. “Yeah, how exactly do you plan to prove yourself, huh?”
I clenched my fists, the cold rush of determination flooding through me. I had been so desperate to see them both that I’d hurried back wearing my old lab clothes. They looked worn and tattered, but those clothes were more than just fabric—they were radiation-proof and bulletproof. Even after being ambushed by those thugs, I only looked a bit bruised. The clothes had shielded me from serious harm.
“Come on, show us what you’ve got. We could use a good laugh,” Charlotte taunted, folding her arms.
My heart clenched when I saw Ivy shyly step forward. “Mom, I’ve been saving up secretly—over a hundred thousand dollars. It’s all on this card.” She quietly handed me a card, her voice barely above a whisper.
Tears I’d fought so hard to hold back spilled freely down my cheeks. I gently slid the card back into her pocket, my voice thick with emotion. “Don’t worry, sweetheart. Mommy’s going to show them exactly what she’s made of.”
Taking a steadying breath, I pulled out my phone and dialed a number.
“Well, well, Jenna. You finally made it home, and instead of cozying up with your husband, you’re calling me?” The voice on the other end chuckled with amusement.
“Chief, I need to tell you something serious,” I said, steady and firm. “My husband’s married someone else now, and they have a child together. I want custody of my daughter back, but they want to test me first.”
Before I could finish, Charlotte snatched the phone from my hand. “Hey, old fart! You’re Jenna’s boss? Ha! She wants you to show off in front of our Mr. Shaw. That’s rich! I hope you’ve got the guts to come here, you old bastard!”
The line went silent for a moment. I could almost hear my boss’s stunned reaction—he’d never been called that before.
I straightened, fire burning in my eyes. “Then this city is about to get a new owner.”
No sooner had I spoken than the thunderous roar of aircraft engines filled the sky. Everyone instinctively tilted their heads upward.
“Holy hell, what kind of planes are those?” someone gasped.
“They’re not civilian aircraft. Why are they flying so low?” another whispered.
Under the stunned gazes of the crowd, several planes descended smoothly, landing right in front of the Shaw Group headquarters. The powerful downdraft hit us all square in the face.
Expressions shifted instantly—from disbelief to shock, and then to a tense silence that spoke volumes. Something major was about to change.
