I handed the phone back to him and nudged him gently.
“You should head home. I’ll take care of submitting my resignation.”
Grayson frowned slightly, about to insist on staying with me, when a voice called out from
behind him.
“Grayson! What a coincidence. Did you see my text?”
“Lillian’s getting her ultrasound today. Aren’t you going to be there for her?”
Grayson visibly tensed.
Leaning toward the guy, he whispered, “Are you blind? My wife’s standing right there.”
The man smirked and waved a hand in front of my face.
Then, with a teasing nudge to Grayson’s shoulder, he said, “Come on, man, you could get away with anything. She wouldn’t know.”
Turning to me, he added with a chuckle, “A smart woman knows not to control her man, right, ma’am?”
I gave a small nod, playing along.
“Why don’t you go with your friend? I’ll be fine.”
Without waiting for a response, I turned and walked away.
Grayson started to reach for my hand, but Lillian cut in smoothly, sliding her fingers down
his chest.
Chapter 1
“Grayson, you’re really going to leave me to handle this all by myself?”
She said, her voice dripping with sweetness.
Grayson froze mid–step, his hand instinctively capturing hers.
His voice turned gentle–soft in a way I’d never heard before.
“Of course not. I’d never do that.”
Later, as I submitted my resignation, the department head congratulated me on my recovered eyesight.
He asked several times if I was sure about going to Montana for the three–year medical aid
program.
I nodded firmly.
On my way out, I passed the ultrasound room.
Through the slightly open door, I saw Grayson crouched down, pressing his ear gently against Lillian’s belly.
She stroked his hair tenderly, letting out a soft giggle as he planted a kiss on her stomach.
“Be careful not to strain yourself during this stage,” a nurse advised.
Grayson nodded earnestly while his friends stood nearby, covering their mouths to stifle laughter.
“Oh man, how’s Grayson gonna survive this?” one of them joked.
Lillian blushed and muttered shyly, “Exactly! Just a few nights ago, he couldn’t wait to have
me in his bed–even his marital bed.”
It was the first time I’d ever seen Grayson blush.
Chapter 1
But his embarrassment quickly faded as his face turned dark.
“Don’t let this get back to my wife,” he warned in a low voice.
The group just waved him off casually.
“Relax. Even if you and Lillian were fooling around right in front of her, she wouldn’t have
a clue.”
At that moment, a nurse behind me called out, “Dr. Harper, you left something in the department head’s office earlier!”
Her voice cut through the room like a knife.
Everything inside the ultrasound room fell silent in an instant.
