Ditching Me for His 'Soulmate'? His Loss. Next Stop: My New Life novel Chapter 87

Chapter 10

There truly is nothing new under the sun.

Lucas’s downfall was a tale that had unfolded countless times before, a familiar script played out over and over. From what I gathered through whispers and updates from old colleagues, the firm began to unravel less than two months after I walked away.

It wasn’t simply because Lucas preferred to keep his distance as a hands-off leader. When I left, the company was already adrift, lacking a solid captain at the helm. But more than that, his paranoia worsened with each passing day, and the golden chances that once lay within his reach slipped through his fingers like sand.

While I hold no personal respect for Lucas, I can’t deny that, in his professional capacity, he had undeniable talent. Yet, his glaring shortcomings—his emotional blindness, the rash choices he made, and his unyielding stubbornness—were the cracks that ultimately shattered everything.

The firm ground to a halt, slowly but surely.

Even when some of his old allies stepped forward to lend a hand, he pushed them all away, isolating himself further. His passion for the work had long since faded, replaced by a cold indifference.

Emma, seeing that Lucas was no longer a viable partner in anything, chose to leave swiftly, without even a single glance back.

The company dragged on for another year, barely surviving, but it was clear from the start that it was doomed to fail.

Listening to my former colleague vent didn’t bring me any satisfaction. Honestly, Lucas’s collapse was inevitable. There was no point in mocking his downfall, nor did he deserve any sympathy.

This was the path he had chosen, and whatever consequences followed were entirely on him.

I smiled quietly to myself.

“I thought as much. This was bound to happen,” I said softly.

Then the voice on the other end of the phone brightened noticeably.

“Since you’re free now, why don’t you come work with me?” he suggested.

We both laughed, the warmth of the moment easing the tension.

“Of course. Just make sure you get some rest and be ready for the interview,” I reminded him.

After hanging up, I felt a surprising lightness settle over me, as if a heavy weight had been lifted from my shoulders.

I hadn’t become a workaholic, pushing myself endlessly to prove something to the world. Nor had I been crushed by my emotions, sinking into a pit of misery and despair.

In this moment, I found a perfect balance within my heart.

The scales of justice had finally tipped, delivering their final blow.

And in the end, freedom and happiness were mine once more.
