She met the officer’s eyes. “So you’re blaming me just because I was at the hospital? Fine. What motive are you giving me?”
Her calm, almost defiant questions clearly irritated the officers. They weren’t expecting her to push back. To break her down, one of them leaned forward, voice colder than ever. “The caretaker said you hold a grudge against Mrs. Salisbury for what she did to you in the past. You used returning her things as an excuse to kidnap and hurt her. What do you have to say about that?”
Wiona smiled. “Well, you should know I actually returned everything? An apartment, a penthouse, a bracelet worth half a million dollars—the symbol of the next Salisbury matriarch. If I really wanted to hurt her, would I have bothered to bring all that back? Does that make any sense to you? Look, I know being accused by them makes me suspect number one, but can we at least try to be fair and logical?”
Her words made the two officers exchange a look. Without another word, they stood up and left the room, leaving Wiona alone with her thoughts.
A few minutes later, Jace walked in with the officers.
The moment Wiona saw him, cold anger surged in her chest. She hadn’t realized Jace would go this far just to mess with her. Knowing he was behind all this, she felt her heart sink. All she could do was hope Madison had gotten her phone and would find someone who could help. Otherwise, she had no idea how she was going to get out of this mess. After all, the person who frames you is always the one who knows exactly how innocent you are.
Jace glanced at the cops and said, “I want a few minutes alone with her.”
To Wiona’s disbelief, the officers actually nodded and left. One of them even gave Jace a pat on the shoulder. “It’s a family matter. Just don’t take too long.” His tone made it clear he didn’t think Wiona should be here at all.
As soon as the door closed, Jace moved closer, bracing his hands on the table and leaning in so their faces were only inches apart. “You really thought you could get away from me, Wiona? You even gave back the bracelet. Are you that eager to run from the Salisbury family? Fine. Let’s see how long you can keep pretending you’re so tough. As long as I’m here, you’re not leaving. Not even Kyle could get you out.”
