Conrad’s voice was so quiet, Wiona could barely hear him. She leaned in closer, almost pressing her ear to his lips. Then she caught a faint whisper, “Water…”
Water? Was he asking for a drink? Wiona quickly nodded. “Alright, I’ll get it. Just wait a second.” She started to stand, but before she could move away, Conrad’s hand reached out and gently tugged her back down. Off balance, she ended up falling right into his arms.
“What do you think you’re doing?” A sharp voice cut through the moment.
Wiona turned, startled, to see Libby standing in the doorway. She looked furious, her glare fixed on her like she was some kind of troublemaker caught in the act. Wiona felt her heart sink. There was no way she could explain herself out of this.
Libby strode into the room. “Ms. Morgan, what are you doing? Do you realize Mr. Sullivan isn’t just injured, he’s also running a fever? You could have made things worse with what you just did! And sure, you’re a guest of the Sullivan family, but that doesn’t mean you can just walk into his room whenever you feel like it.”
Her words stung. She was basically saying she had crossed a line. Wiona just lifted her arm, still pinned by Conrad’s grip. “I don’t want to hurt him. He asked for water. Since you’re here now, you take care of him.” She paused, then added, “And you’re right. I shouldn’t have come in. I’m sorry.”
Wiona wasn’t the type to argue or insist when she was in the wrong. Now that Libby had called her out, anything she said would just make things worse. Besides, Conrad had a whole medical team. There was no real need for her to stay.
She pulled her arm free, stood up, and stepped aside so Libby could take over. Only then did Libby realize that she hadn’t just thrown herself into Conrad’s arms. A hint of embarrassment flickered on her face. She suddenly realized that if Conrad woke up and heard about her attitude, she might be in trouble. Even if she didn’t want Mr. Sullivan and Ms. Morgan getting too close, she couldn’t deny that Conrad treated her differently.
“My apologies, Ms. Morgan. I shouldn’t have spoken to you like that.” Her tone was stiff, but at least she tried.
Wiona just nodded and left the room, saying nothing more. She could sense the tension lingering in the air. Libby watched her go, feeling uneasy. This couldn’t go on. If Ms. Morgan started showing, and the world found out how close she was to Mr. Sullivan, the Sullivan family’s reputation would be ruined.
