“That way, the kids won’t have to worry about their identities being exposed someday. They can grow up in a new place, carefree, just like any other children. And I can finally walk away from all the complicated ties in Stonehill and be myself again.” Wiona’s voice was steady. Her face didn’t give anything away.
But Conrad could sense it all. The loneliness that came from being forced into a corner. The courage it took to leave everything behind and start over. In that moment, she was more than just strikingly beautiful. Sitting by the window with lace curtains, Wiona seemed to glow with a gentle, motherly warmth. A soft light seemed to spill from her, though she had no idea.
Conrad’s eyes fell to her belly, just beginning to show. The last report had said there were two. She was carrying his twins. The thought felt surreal, almost unbelievable, but at the same time, kind of perfect.
“Can I… touch your belly?” he asked quietly.
The teacup Wiona had just picked up shook in her hand. She almost dropped it. Conrad reached out and caught it just in time, setting it back down with care.
He knew what he was asking was a little much. But she’d hidden the truth about getting pregnant with his children. That wasn’t exactly polite either. In his mind, they were even now, so Conrad didn’t feel guilty about making this request.
He stared at her, eyes intense and unwavering. Wiona couldn’t bring herself to say no. Embarrassed and guilty, her cheeks flushed as she stood and walked over to him.
“Please… be gentle,” she said softly.
Conrad placed his large hand on her belly, moving slowly and carefully. Instinctively, Wiona leaned back, only for his other hand to steady her by the waist and draw her closer again. He didn’t move, just left his hand there, feeling for the life growing inside her.
Wiona was so tense, she forgot to breathe.
“Breathe,” Conrad told her quietly. “Take it slow.”
She listened, letting out the breath she’d been holding. Her face was still red, but her nerves began to settle. She stayed perfectly still, letting Conrad’s hand rest where it was.
A strange, unexpected feeling washed over her. Wiona couldn’t help but compare: Whenever Jace put his hand on her belly, all she felt was irritation. But with Conrad, she didn’t want to push him away. In fact, there was a tiny flutter of happiness inside her.
