Daniel threw himself across the bed, sobbing so hard his whole body shook. “Mom!”

Their cries echoed down the hallway, and soon the rest of the Salisbury family rushed in, filling the room with their grief. Isaac hurried to Daniel, gently supporting his frail father, his own eyes rimmed with red. “Dad, you have to be strong.”

He wasn’t close with Grandma Grace, but he couldn’t stop his tears. Around them, others wept, and the whole room felt heavy with sorrow.

Wiona followed her into the hall. At the end, Dr. Monroe was waiting, holding a wooden box. Jean took it from her, then turned to Wiona. “Give this to Ms. Morgan,” she said quietly. “It’s from Grandma Grace. Everything in here is for you. There’s something inside you’ve been looking for.”

Something she’d wanted? Wiona glanced at Tim, and he stepped forward to take the box for her. Jean let out a tired sigh. “Ms. Morgan, no matter what happened… thank you for coming. Grandma Grace’s ways weren’t always right, but she truly loved you. She wanted you in the Salisbury family, that’s the truth.”

That love had ruined Wiona’s career, though, and it wasn’t something she could forgive or even agree with. Still, with Grandma Grace gone, holding onto resentment felt pointless.
