Wiona’s voice was cool and steady, so calm that Sophie’s arms tightened around herself without her even realizing. So, this was Wiona. Definitely not someone to take lightly.
Still, Sophie was no stranger to high-stakes situations. She’d been through countless battles in the courtroom, faced all kinds of criminals and storms. Even if Wiona’s poise took her by surprise, she just chalked it up to a cunning and ruthless mind. This was a mind game now, and Sophie wasn’t about to blink first.
She kept her face perfectly serene, letting out a cold laugh. “I was invited here by the Simpson family. I only found out my aunt was here after I arrived. From what I know, she’s been having terrible headaches lately. Conrad keep upsetting her, and she was suffering so much. That’s why she’s been staying with the Simpsons. They’ve been taking care of her, even doing some therapy sessions. You know what that means, right, Ms. Morgan? Sometimes, just lying here and breathing in some calming incense is the only way my aunt can get any rest. But of course, the second you walk in, you act like it’s some kind of trap. What’s wrong? Are you really so worried about your baby that you think a bit of incense will do harm? Ms. Morgan, paranoia is one thing, but don’t go around blaming people for nothing. If you want to stir things up between me and Conrad, that’s your business. Just don’t make things worse between him and his mother.”
Wiona rested a hand on her belly and smiled. “Lawyers really do have a way with words. But honestly, Ms. Clements, maybe you’re the one who’s paranoid. You think I’m trying to get between you and Conrad, but we barely even mention you. To us, you’re just not that important.”
Sophie’s mask finally slipped. “You… You’re lying!” She couldn’t accept it. There was no way Conrad never talked about her. Wiona had to be making this up. After all, Sophie had made her dramatic entrance the night Conrad proposed to Wiona, ruining what should have been Wiona’s big moment. With a mind as calculating as Wiona’s, of course she’d bring up Sophie’s name to Conrad whenever she could. How else could she feel secure?
