The owner froze, eyeing her with suspicion.
“You should run a jumper wire first, connect the broken circuit.”
Emmy pointed to a spool of ultra-thin enameled wire beside him. “Use that. Skip the burnt section and hook it straight to the third pin on the power IC.”
The owner just stood there, stunned.
Almost on autopilot, he grabbed the wire and, following her directions, carefully made the connection.
He hit the power button.
The screen flashed. The familiar logo lit up, bright and alive.
“No way...”
His eyes went huge, staring at Emmy like she was some kind of wizard.
“How did you even know that?”
Emmy pressed her lips together. “I know how to fix things. Phones, complicated electronics, you name it.”
Something changed in the owner’s face.
“Did you study this? What school did you go to?”
Emmy shook her head. “No, my grandpa taught me. Plus, I just really like messing around with this stuff.”
The skepticism lingered as he yanked open a drawer and rummaged around.
Finally, he pulled out an ancient satellite phone that looked more like a brick than tech.
“This one.”
He slapped it down on the counter. “It’s been dead for three months. I couldn’t fix it, and neither could any of the techs I brought it to. Think you can handle it?”
Emmy picked it up and glanced at it.
She didn’t even bother opening it.
One look at the worn charging port and the spiderweb cracks across the screen was enough.
“Yeah.”
Just that single word.
She walked around the counter and took a seat right next to him.
She grabbed a screwdriver, her hands moving with a confidence that was almost dizzying to watch.
She took it apart, diagnosed the problem, swapped out the cable, reset the system.
Ten minutes later, there was a sharp beep.
The satellite phone powered up, signal bars full and strong.
The owner almost lost it.
A genius.
This wasn’t just knowing how to fix things. This was on another level.
“I’ve got a stack of broken tablets and smartwatches. Can you fix those too?” His eyes were shining, like he’d just struck gold.
“Sure,” Emmy said, nodding. She added, “But I’m only working today. For every item I fix, I get a cut.”
“Deal!” he blurted out, no hesitation.
For the rest of the day, Emmy barely lifted her head from the battered workbench.
She worked like she was tireless, hands flying as she handled circuit boards and tiny screws with delicate tweezers.
