Adrian looked at Harrison with an expression of pure innocence. "I'm here all the time. Is that strange? In fact, I'm staying the night."
The words had barely left his mouth before Harrison rounded on Selene. "How can you let him stay here? I thought you broke up with him! Even if you were dating, you can't just let any man into your home!"
Before Selene could reply, Adrian spoke up. "At least I'm not as dangerous as you are. You're the one who pilots drones to steal underwear. Some people are just creepy."
"I did not… steal underwear!" Harrison's voice lost its conviction halfway through the denial.
"I called you here to take Felicity with you," Selene said, pulling the conversation back on track.
The moment she spoke, Felicity panicked. "Selene! You can't hand me over to him! If you're going to give me to anyone, it should be Gemma or the Patriarch!"
Selene looked at Felicity. "If the old matriarch and patriarch wanted you as the young lady of the Vaughn family, you would have been. You wouldn't have had to resort to stealing Harrison's sperm and getting pregnant."
Felicity's face went white.
"Selene," Harrison said, his voice strained, "I never touched Felicity. That child might not even be mine!" His explanation sounded weak, even to his own ears.
"You can check the hospital records if you don't believe me!" Felicity shot back.
"You stole my sample from the hospital," Harrison said coldly, "but that doesn't guarantee a successful pregnancy!" He glared at her stomach. "Who knows whose child that really is. And even if it is mine, I don't want it!"
"What if I told you I want you to accept her?"
Her sincerity actually made Felicity feel a little embarrassed. "I thought… you'd never want to see Harrison and me together." She had come to Selene not expecting real help, but hoping to drag her into the drama. She'd imagined that seeing Selene's jealous rage would make Harrison realize that Felicity, his companion of so many years, was the better choice. She never expected Selene to actually advocate for her.
"In the past, I couldn't stand seeing you two so close," Selene admitted. "But now I realize that sometimes we mistake envy for jealousy, and jealousy for love." Her eyes settled on Felicity. "I envied you. You had a stable, privileged life from birth. You moved through the Capital's elite circles with ease. I envied how close you were to Dames; no matter how hard I tried, I could never pull his attention away from you."
She turned back to Harrison. "I understand now. It wasn't love I felt for you so much as envy. I was jealous that you were born at the top, with every advantage, while at twenty-seven, I'm still struggling harder than you ever did. And a love built on envy is a love that fades easily."
"I really would like to see you two together," Selene said with a small smile. "I sincerely hope Dames can get his wish for once. Harrison, you and Felicity grew up together. You're used to having her in your life. Why not give it a try? You might just discover she's the one for you after all."
Her cool, detached words struck Harrison's heart like a series of blows.
