“Nonsense! You already have a mommy; you cannot be with my mommy. That is wrong!” Hubert’s voice rang out, filled with the innocence of a child who believed fiercely in the bonds of family.

As those words hung in the air, Hubert’s large, expressive eyes, usually so full of joy, began to glisten with unshed tears. Slowly, those tears spilled over, cascading down his cheeks like a gentle rain.

“Oh, why are you crying again? Don’t cry!” Ann exclaimed, her voice laced with panic as she rushed to his side, her heart aching at the sight of her friend’s distress.

“I don’t have a mommy anymore, she isn’t my mommy she isn’t… She is a bad woman…” Hubert’s words tumbled out, each statement punctuated by a sob, the hurt in his voice palpable.

With every utterance, his cries grew louder, a symphony of sorrow that echoed through the room, unyielding and raw.

Ann, flustered and overwhelmed, wrung her hands in anxiety. “Why are you crying? What do you mean she isn’t your mommy? I don’t understand. Stop crying quickly! Otherwise, my mommy…” Her voice trailed off, the unspoken worry of what might happen next hanging in the air.

Just then, the door creaked open, and the moment was shattered.

Oh no!

Tatiana stepped into the room, immediately sensing the tension as Hubert’s cries reached her ears. She paused, her heart sinking as she took in the sight before her: the little boy, utterly heartbroken, his face a canvas of snot and tears.

“What’s wrong, Hubert?” she asked gently, her maternal instincts kicking in as she knelt beside him.

“Mommy, I don’t know either! He suddenly started crying and kept saying his mommy wasn’t his mommy,” Ann explained, her voice a mix of confusion and concern.

Tatiana moved closer, her heart aching for the little boy. “Hubert, what happened? Don’t cry. Tell Auntie Su.”

At the sound of her soothing voice, Hubert’s pent-up sadness began to spill over. He opened his mouth to speak, but as he did, a large snot bubble formed, wobbling precariously on his nose.

Pop! It burst with a comical sound, the tension in the room dissipating in an instant.

A heavy silence fell, thick with an unexpected awkwardness.

Tatiana fought to maintain her composure, but beside her, Ann erupted with laughter. “Pfft.”

“Hahahaha hahahaha…” Tatiana couldn’t help but join in, the sound of their laughter breaking through the heaviness that had enveloped them.

Hubert, feeling a rush of embarrassment, wished he could disappear into the floor, his cheeks flushing crimson as he buried his face in his hands.

“Don’t, don’t laugh…” he whimpered, his voice muffled.

Tatiana took a deep breath, clearing her throat as she attempted to regain her serious demeanor. “Ahem, alright, I won’t laugh. But you can’t cry either. Now, tell me what’s wrong?”

With the laughter fading, Hubert looked downcast, his voice barely a whisper. “She isn’t my mommy.”

Her heart sank at his words. Calmly, she probed, “How do you know?”

“Duddy told me,” he replied, his small frame shaking slightly.

“He said so personally?”

“Mm…” Hubert nodded, his expression a mix of confusion and hurt.

“Then… who is your mommy?” Tatiana’s heart raced, a twinge of anxiety gripping her as she awaited his answer.

Hubert shook his head, his brows furrowing in frustration. “I don’t know. Daddy didn’t tell me.”

As she watched him, a fierce urge welled up within her—she wanted nothing more than to wrap him in her arms and tell him, *I am your mommy.*

But as the thought crossed her mind, the image of Jasper loomed large, casting a shadow of fear over her heart.

Ann, sensing the tension, reached out and enveloped Hubert in a warm hug. “Don’t cry. From now on, my mommy is your mommy!”

A flicker of hope ignited in Hubert’s eyes, and he nodded vigorously, a smile breaking through the tears. “Ma!”

“But Daddy said his mommy is not his biological mommy; she’s a kidnapper. She stole him away from Mommy and even wed him to steal Tatiana’s song!”
