Chapter 86
Sophie’s words came out faster and sharper, her tiny face all scrunched up in a storm of frustration.
‘It’s all because of Cora being around,’ Sophie fumed inwardly.
She didn’t even feel like going to school now.
Just catching sight of that brat drove her up the wall.
Her eyes were red with anger, and her fingers dug so hard into her own arm that her pale skin was streaked with angry red marks.
Sienna’s brows knit together for a moment as she reached over and placed her hand gently on Sophie’s, her eyes calm and a touch distant. “If you know they’re both pathetic, just stay away from them.”
The soft touch made Sophie’s lashes tremble.
She looked up, eyes red and face scrunched miserably, lips pursed. “Sienna, do you think… I’m really dumb?”
Sienna asked, “Why do you say that?”
“I didn’t see through Cora’s whole fake-sweet act at first. She used me as her ticket out of her old life, and then took away everyone I cared about,” Sophie muttered, biting her lip.
Sienna smiled gently and patted her head. “But honestly, I think it just means you’re a good person-you’d help anyone in need without a second thought.
“Sure, she used you, and she ended up hurting you, but that’s on her. Don’t waste your energy stressing over someone who’s not worth your time.”
Sophie’s eyes brightened a little. “And then there’s Declan. We’ve known each other for ten years, but every time I end up fighting with Cora, he always takes her side, backs her up, and even forces me to apologize to her!”
“If ten years of friendship can be undone by just a handful of sneaky words, it shows that your so-called childhood friend and that girl are really just birds of a feather,” Sienna said with a sly smile.
“You treasure those ten years together and think of him as your soulmate, but he just treats himself like some hero swooping in to save the day,” she added. “What Cora took from you was honestly just junk you could’ve tossed out without looking back… And as for her…”
Sienna paused and a mischievous smile flickered in her eyes. “Do you really think someone who clawed her way up by acting helpless and feeding his need to play hero can actually hang onto that spot?”
“And besides, that branch she’s clinging to was yours to give in the first place. If one day you decide to take it back, do you honestly think it would still matter to her at all?” Sienna asked.
Sophie’s eyes went wide, staring blankly at Sienna. “So… you really think all this mess between me and Declan isn’t actually my fault?”
Chapter Ou
It was the first time she had ever been told that the whole fallout with Declan wasn’t really on her.
It was just because she happened to be the Brown family’s heiress.
Whenever Sophie argued with Declan or Cora, their mutual friends would jump in and point fingers at her- saying she was acting all high and mighty, throwing her heiress attitude around, and always using her status to push people around.
Little by little, Sophie couldn’t help but start questioning herself.
‘Maybe I really am just… too bossy? Is that why people like Cora more than me?’ Sophie thought to herself.
But now, Sienna was telling her she wasn’t the problem. She even called her kind.
Sophie’s eyes went red all over again.
“Of course it’s not your fault,” Sienna said, leaning in and giving Sophie’s nose a gentle tap. “Here’s what you need to remember. If being in a relationship makes you feel miserable, cut it off clean. There’s no point hanging onto something that only drains you.
“Forget about those ten years and thinking it’s too hard to let go. If he could drop you for someone else in a heartbeat, why should you hold onto him? You were never limited. You just forgot you’ve always had endless choices.”
Sophie’s eyes, clear and bright, grew wider with every word.
In that moment, it was like the fog cleared from her mind. Everything finally clicked.
‘That’s right, Sophie thought to herself. ‘For all these years, I was the only one stubbornly clinging to this childhood friends thing. I was never limited. I always had other roads to choose.’
‘I never needed Declan just to get by. Why did I keep doubting myself, beating myself up over this friendship?’ she wondered. ‘I never really needed Declan to survive!’
‘It was just that I’d been chasing after this old crush for ten years, and that’s what kept messing with me. But after all, it’s hard to shake off feelings that have stuck around so long. Could I really let it go just like that? Honestly, I am not sure myself,’ Sophie thought sadly.
Suddenly, someone made a cheesy sound effect.
Alvin swaggered over, rocking a racing suit and flaunting a neon green, futuristic helmet like it was a trophy.
He threw his arms out and spun theatrically in front of Sienna and Sophie, putting on a show.
Stopping with a flourish, Alvin flicked his bangs and raised his chin with a ridiculously smug grin. “Well? Aren’t I absolutely oozing with coolness? Admit it-I look so good it hurts!”
Sienna and Sophie just stared at him, speechless.
‘Does he love green so much he’d actually slap a neon helmet on his head?’ both girls thought.
Chapter 86
With that blinding racing suit and the over-the-top helmet combo, he was hands down the flashiest guy in the crowd-the real MVP of the scene.
Honestly, his parents deserve credit for blessing him with such a ridiculously handsome face.
Otherwise, there was no way he’d be able to rock that bizarre look.
Sophie forced her eyes away from that neon helmet and nodded with mock solemnity. “Uh-huh, super cool,”
Alvin stuck his chin out like he was on top of the world, tossing his bangs for extra effect. “Obviously! Sophie, just watch me out there. I’ll let you see what real coolness looks like!”
Sophie clapped. “Wow.”
That “wow” just made Alvin even more fired up.
He smacked his chest with confidence. “Relax, Sophie! I swear I’ll snag first place and dedicate the prize to you!”
Alvin, hyped up and brimming with confidence, charged straight toward the maintenance area like he was ready to conquer the whole event.
Every racer’s car had to go through a full inspection at the maintenance area.
The main goal was to make sure all the cars passed the safety check, so there wouldn’t be any unexpected accidents out on the track.
And another reason was that they needed to make sure no cars had any unauthorized gadgets or tricked-out mods that could mess with the results.
Phantom Bay was the kind of top-tier venue that even world-class race drivers from every country showed up for, so one could imagine just how strict the rules were.
Obviously, with Alvin’s skill level, there was no way he’d be racing against the real pros.
He was actually entered in Phantom Bay Speedway’s opening warm-up race.
This was basically a special event for rich kids who were motorsport fans to get in on the action and soak up the racing vibes.
Since it was all high-society kids playing, the champion’s prize at these warm-up events was always seriously
generous.
No one held back when it came to the prizes.
Of course, for these rich kids, it was never really about the prize. It was all about snatching the title of “King of the Track” and being worshipped as the ultimate racing legend in their elite circle!
Every month, there was a massive event.
If one managed to take home first place at a venue like this, he would never stop flexing about it. He would
LIP”
make it his brand.
Ernest was also signed up for this warm-up race.
So, Alvin and Ernest ended up facing off in the same division-right on a collision course.
