I was chatting with Leonardo through text messages. He said the mining business was nearly wrapped up and he’d soon be back in Maritime City. I was genuinely happy for him, yet still reminded him to take it easy. After all, he’d just recovered and shouldn’t overwork.
Just as I was lost in the pleasant thought of his return, a message from Landon popped up, shattering the warm atmosphere like a bucket of cold water.
He sent, “Natalie, Grandma will be back tomorrow. She wants to see you. Can you come back for lunch?”
My good mood evaporated instantly. Louisa, Landon’s grandma, was the only elder in Thorn Pack who’d ever shown me real warmth and protection. After she left, life in that cold pack became truly unbearable. I had always held her in deep gratitude and respect.
I hesitated for a long time, my fingertips hovering over the screen. I didn’t want to involve Louisa in the mess between Landon and me. She was old, with heart and blood
pressure issues. The pack doctor had repeatedly warned her against getting too emotional.
“I’m swamped. Can’t make it. Don’t let her wait for me,” I replied. I knew Landon would be relentless once I responded (1
I knew Landon would be relentless once I responded. Sure enough, his messages kept pouring in, using Louisa to persuade me.
But I sent only that one reply. His subsequent messages received no response from me. As I glanced at the interrupted chat with Leonardo, annoyance welled up. Everything about the Richardson family was suffocating.
Landon’s POV:
Natalie’s rejection was no surprise, but her simple response gave me a glimmer of hope. I know her inside out. Having lost her kin at a young age, she treasured elders who were kind to her. As long as Grandma wanted to see her, she’d come back eventually. The longer she refused, the more it showed my patience and tolerance.
At noon the next day, Louisa arrived right on time. I’d already instructed the servants to make all the preparations, ready to welcome her with top-notch hospitality.
“Where’s Natalie?” Louisa stepped in, barely sparing me a glance after so long apart, and immediately started looking for that familiar face.

“Grandma, I told you, Natalie’s out of the territory. She’s up to her neck in work and can’t make it for lunch. Don’t worry. Take a rest first, and we can catch up later.” I forced a gentle smile and motioned for the servants to take the luggage from her escort.
Louisa gave me a sharp look with her cloudy yet perceptive eyes and said nothing. She let me support her towards the dining room. I felt a bit relieved, thinking I’d managed to pull the wool over her eyes.
Just as I was about to invite her to sit down, though, she jerked her hand out of mine with surprising force for an old woman.
“I came back today to see Natalie! Until you bring her back, no one eats,” she declared, a frosty look descending on her face. The latent power of the former Luna seeped out, making the servants around us go quiet.
Leaning on her wolf-carved eaglewood cane, she refused all offers of help and made her way slowly but steadily towards Natalie’s bedroom upstairs. I knew I was in trouble and trailed after her.
Once she saw that Natalie’s things were mostly gone, Louisa’s lips tightened. Her breathing quickened as she gripped the cane. The air in the villa grew thick and tense.
I forced myself to step forward and explain, “Grandma, don’t get so worked up. Your health is important. Natalie moved out to have some private space for a bit. She…”
“Before I left, you two were inseparable! And now, just like that, she’s moved out?” Louisa’s voice was raspy with anger. “Landon, do you really think I’m too old to see what’s going on? I
