Family on Their Knees Heart Turned to Ice novel Chapter 88

When Lillian sat down in the front row, Sebastian and his group had not yet arrived.

Nathan, seeing her return, figured that the seating was indeed strictly assigned this year, leaving her no other choice. She leaned closer to him and quietly asked about what she had just overheard.

The industry conference had only started in recent years, during the time she had stepped back to raise a family. Sebastian never discussed work with her, so she was completely unaware of the event's hidden traditions.

“I heard them talking about some kind of game, a PK match, and how no one wants to go up against Bella. What’s that about?”

Nathan explained, “Don’t worry. If you don’t want to show off your skills, you can just sit out the game portion.”

Lillian pressed, “But I heard it’s a random draw. Can I just choose not to participate?”

Nathan paused, then his expression shifted as he realized there was likely a trap.

“Damn, they’re getting more and more devious. It’s like this: the first part of the conference is a series of dull industry reports. The main reason I wanted you here was for this part; it’s useful information for you. But because it’s so boring, they added a game segment to liven things up. There are two types of games: video games, and then showdowns between the programming giants.”

Lillian didn’t need to ask about the programming challenges. She was more curious about the other part.

“Video games?”

Nathan nodded. “Yeah, the kind we used to play. Don’t worry, even if you get picked, you’ll be more than fine.”

Lillian looked at Nathan. “What do you think the chances are that I get matched with Bella?”

Nathan’s mind raced, and he immediately understood the implication of her question.

“So... you’re thinking of giving her a little taste of what you can do?”

Lillian gave a faint smile. For now, it all seemed like a bunch of trivial games. Her only purpose in coming was to gather industry information. She truly had no interest in anything else. Besides, with her company just starting, she had a mountain of work to do. For one, she was still a general without an army. Ethan had brought in a management team, so operations were running smoothly, but her own department was a different story. She couldn’t do everything herself; she’d work herself to death. Hiring for the IT department required her personal review, and while plenty of resumes had come in, she had yet to find a suitable, experienced candidate.

Seeing that Lillian was lost in thought, Nathan didn’t disturb her. Just as the venue was nearly full, Sebastian arrived with Bella and their entourage, walking straight toward their seats. Sebastian sat down next to her.

“You’d better not leave my sight today,” he warned in a low, patronizing tone.
