Family on Their Knees Heart Turned to Ice novel Chapter 89

The host slowly unfolded the small piece of paper.

She then showed it to the audience and announced the seat number: “Number sixteen. Let’s see who is in seat number sixteen.”

As she spoke, the host picked up a chart that matched seat numbers with names.

Sebastian’s expression was as dark as ink. He glanced at Lillian, and Bella’s lips curled into a fleeting, mocking smile that vanished as quickly as it appeared.

The host had found the name. “The head of Lillionix, Ms. Mercer.”

She paused for a moment. “Is this a newcomer to the industry? The name is unfamiliar. Our field is so vibrant, with new talent emerging every year. We look forward to seeing what Ms. Mercer has to offer. Now, I wonder who her opponent will be? Let’s find out!”

With that, the host reached back into the box to draw Lillian’s opponent.

Nathan suddenly shot a look at Sebastian.

Many in the audience were also surprised. The name Lillian Mercer was completely unknown in their industry. They had no idea what she was capable of. How could a brand-new company, with no known projects or business, not only get into the conference but also be seated so close to the front? It seemed like a joke. Many of them were industry veterans and didn't have the privilege of sitting in the front row.

Some had heard the gossip, and soon, murmurs spread through the crowd, with many speculating that Lillian must be Nathan’s mistress.

These whispers naturally reached the ears of the Mercer men.

Martin’s brow furrowed into a deep frown. Brandon remembered how he had tried to get Lillian to leave before the conference started. Not only had she refused, but she had walked straight to the front and sat down next to Sebastian. Brandon deeply regretted not using force to remove her then. Did she enjoy being so close to Sebastian and Bella? Was she trying to become the subject of more gossip?

Brandon had never felt such intense disgust for his sister.

Just then, the host on stage unfolded the second number and announced it: “Number fourteen. From the Blake Group, Miss Bella Ward.”

A few people let out sharp gasps, while many others breathed a sigh of relief that they wouldn’t have to face Bella this year.

But then it dawned on them: the infamous PK assassin, Bella, was being pitted against an industry newcomer. The situation suddenly became very interesting. A newcomer? What did that even mean? It was just too tragic. Many in the audience offered a silent prayer for Lillian. To be matched against Bella, the US-educated prodigy from the Blake Group, on her very first appearance? She was going to be annihilated.

Brandon and Martin exchanged a look of pure fury.

Martin seethed, “Find an opportunity to get your sister out of there. What kind of event is this for her to be making a fool of herself and embarrassing us?”

Brandon replied, “But they’ve already drawn her name. If I make her leave now...”

“Better to be a coward than to be completely humiliated up there. Get her out of here.”

Brandon nodded. “You’re right. She doesn’t know anything. She’s just going to be a laughingstock anyway. Better to leave with an excuse.”
