She just couldn’t figure out what Tyler was getting at with all this.
“Well, you know how men are. Maybe he just wants to wax nostalgic about the past—totally normal. And didn’t he say he’d wait until Vivienne passes away before trying to get back together with you? He’s probably trying to keep you close, make sure you don’t run off,” Joyce analyzed, ticking off the points with practiced ease.
Emilia nodded. That actually made sense.
“But wait—don’t tell me you’re actually considering getting back with him!” Joyce suddenly straightened in her seat.
“No way,” Emilia replied, glancing at a painting on the wall. “Joyce, the day I was in the hospital stairwell, whatever feelings I had for him pretty much died.”
Joyce let out a long sigh and hurried to say, “Sorry, that’s on me. I shouldn’t have brought it up again.”
“It’s fine. I’ve got Bella now,” Emilia answered.
“Yeah, anyway, just play along for now, okay? I’m worried if you don’t show up, he’ll pull some kind of stunt tomorrow,” Joyce warned. “I’ll have my brother keep an eye out nearby. If anything happens, just call him.”
Emilia nodded in agreement.
After hanging up, she checked the time—there was still a little left—so she headed back to discuss the stage costumes with the designer.
This round of outfits was on the complicated side; every detail had to be just right.
“Thank you for all your hard work,” Emilia said at last, once they’d reached an agreement. “I’m counting on you for this one.”
“Don’t worry, you can trust me,” the designer replied with a warm smile.
They’d already worked together on four shows, and both sides were more than satisfied.
It was mutual success.
After a little more small talk, Emilia saw it was nearly time and went to change. Then she headed out to pick up Bella from school.
Soon, Emilia’s car pulled up in front of the preschool.
Bella was waiting inside.
“Miss Emilia!” Bella called out the moment she saw her.
Emilia swept her up in a hug.
“Bella, Miss Emilia has a question for you,” she said, looking Bella in the eye. “Tyler invited us to dinner tonight—it’s sort of a farewell thing. Do you want to go?”
If Bella didn’t want to, Emilia would just say no.
“What do you think, Miss Emilia?” Bella didn’t agree or refuse, just looked at her curiously.
Emilia met Bella’s gaze and said, “I want to know what you want. If you’re not comfortable, we won’t go.”
He straightened and looked at Emilia. “Shall we?”
Emilia nodded and took Bella’s hand, heading toward the car.
“Ride with me,” Tyler suggested.
Emilia shot him a cold look.
She still remembered all too well how Bella had been terrified that last time in his car.
“Tyler, I’m never letting Bella ride in your car again. Not in this lifetime.”
Tyler was taken aback for a moment, then nodded, saying nothing more.
They each got into their cars and set off.
Both cars pulled up outside Alden City’s biggest seaside restaurant.
Emilia helped Bella out of the car and walked over to meet Tyler.
Together, the three of them stepped into the restaurant just as the gentle chime of a clock rang out.
It was five o’clock in the afternoon.
