It was a long while before Emilia finally arrived at the hospital.
She hadn’t intended to come at all, but then Mrs. Erickson called her.
“Emily, we know about your divorce from Tyler. Your grandfather… he’s fallen ill.”
Mrs. Erickson’s voice was gentle but insistent. “I understand you may not want to see Tyler, but perhaps you could come visit us—just the two of us old folks. If nothing else, we could talk about the matters concerning the divorce.”
So, Emilia came.
She brought Joyce with her, carrying little Bella in her arms.
Bella soon ran off with Joyce to play in her office, leaving Emilia to walk alone down the long, sterile hallway toward Mr. Erickson’s room.
Tyler was standing right outside the door. His parents had refused to let him in.
When he saw Emilia, he looked like he wanted to say something, but she walked straight past him without a word, closing the door firmly behind her.
Tyler was left standing in the hallway, staring at the closed door, a deep sadness settling over him.
—
Inside the hospital room, Mr. Erickson was already awake.
“Emily, you’re here,” he said weakly.
Emilia stood by the bed, her emotions tangled and raw.
After a moment, she nodded and greeted him, “Grandpa Erickson.”
Not “Grandpa,” the way Tyler used to call him, but “Grandpa Erickson.”
The elderly couple both noticed the subtle change in address. There was a quiet resignation in their eyes.
For a moment, silence hung between the three of them.
But in the end, someone had to speak. After all, the reason Emilia was here was because Mrs. Erickson had asked her to discuss the divorce arrangements. Of course, she had also come to visit Mr. Erickson, but that wasn’t her real reason.
She and Tyler were already divorced. From now on, his family would be just that—his family. Nothing more.
