Emilia shook her head, offering no details—she only insisted that they needed to leave.
Theodore paused to consider. “Where are you headed? I’ll drive you.”
She glanced at him and replied, “The Erickson Group.”
He studied her face, searching for more, then nodded.
Soon after, a car pulled up outside The Erickson Group’s building.
“I’ll go in with you,” Theodore offered.
“That’s not necessary,” Emilia replied, not wanting to complicate things any further.
She already had a plan forming in her mind for how she might win this wager. The six gemstones—that was the key.
Kaufman… He never played by the rules.
She needed to test the waters, figure out exactly what he was up to.
And she certainly couldn’t let anyone know what she was doing on this side of things.
Theodore nodded. “I’ll wait for you in the parking garage.”
Emilia didn’t argue; she simply agreed with a nod.
With that, she stepped out of the car and strode into The Erickson Building.
Theodore drove off and parked in the garage. As he sat in the driver’s seat, the warmth faded from his expression.
He pulled out his phone and dialed a number.
After a couple of rings, someone answered.
“I need you to take care of something for me…”
He gave a string of instructions, then finally hung up, gazing through the windshield at the distant façade of The Erickson Building.
Meanwhile, Emilia stood inside the CEO’s office.
The moment she entered, she spotted Tyler across the room.
Before Emilia could take it, a strong, broad hand snatched the document away.
Tyler.
Just like that bleak autumn years ago, when he’d held her close, his hands stained with her blood as he signed the contract with pen and seal.
Now, he gripped the contract tightly, eyes narrowed, fixing Kaufman with a dangerous stare.
Kaufman met his gaze, something sharp glinting in his eyes.
Then he smiled.
“I’ve honored this contract all these years because of Emilia,” he said, turning to Tyler. “But now that you two are divorced, I think it’s time to void the agreement.”
He shifted his gaze to Emilia, smiling. “What do you say? All it takes is one word from you, and I’ll end it right now.”
Emilia didn’t look at Kaufman. Instead, she stepped to Tyler’s side and reached for the contract.
Page by page, clause by clause, she saw again how every line had been a blade in the silent battle between them all those years ago.
