Back then, they won.
But she wasn’t the winner.
On the contrary, she lost—completely and irreversibly.
Emilia set the contract aside on the small table and looked across at Kaufman, who was watching her, smiling.
“Raymond Kaufman,” she said, calling him by his full name.
“Hm?” The corners of his mouth curled up in amusement. Gone was the shock and indignation he’d once shown. Now, he looked like a knight waiting for his princess’s command.
But Emilia wasn’t fooled by appearances.
Beneath that polished façade, he was ruthless—a devil whose hands were stained red.
“If you want to back out,” she said evenly, “at least come up with a better excuse. I refuse to be your scapegoat.”
She paused, her voice cold. “And I won’t be your sacrificial pawn, either.”
A flicker of surprise crossed Raymond’s face.
“What?” He looked genuinely taken aback, as if he couldn’t believe what he was hearing.
Just like years ago, when he’d refused to believe that the ever-carefree player could be outmaneuvered by her.
No one else knew the truth about that bet. Everyone assumed all the power had been in Raymond’s hands, that he’d forced Emilia into a game she never wanted.
But in reality, she was the one who’d started it.
Back then, that was only the second time in his life that Raymond Kaufman had truly been caught off guard.
The first time? That, too, was because of her.
It all happened in the span of the ten minutes when Tyler had stepped out. Three surprises in a row—Emilia had managed to turn his world upside down, and in the end, persuaded him to sign the contract he’d never intended to touch. For the first time in years, they’d tasted victory.
“Tell me, Emilia,” Tyler said quietly. “That day in Cerulion, in the ten minutes I was gone—what really happened?”
Before she could answer, he pressed on. “Emilia, the child we lost that year was mine too. I deserve to know.”
A sting pinched her nose, and she yanked her hand free from his grasp.
Her eyes lingered on the contract lying on the table.
He’d once told her the Erickson Group was like their child, that together, they could transform it—make it stronger than ever.
He’d promised her, too, that he and the Erickson Group would always be her strongest support.
But now, he wouldn’t even let her have what rightfully belonged to the Dennis family.
His promises had never really meant anything.
So, after all these years, did she owe him the truth?
