Outside the door, the sharp click of Emilia’s heels echoed down the hallway, fading as she left. Inside, tension hung heavy between the two men facing each other.
Secretary Jensen hesitated, unsure what to do. Chloe, eyes rimmed red, stared at Raymond for a moment before rushing out, desperate to catch up to Emilia.
But she was never going to make it.
Emilia had already stepped into the elevator. The doors slid shut, whisking her swiftly down to the lobby.
Ding.
When the elevator reached the ground floor, Emilia strode out of the Erickson Building, but she didn’t leave right away. Instead, she lingered just outside the main entrance, waiting.
About a minute later, another elevator opened, and Raymond emerged.
He walked out of the building and spotted Emilia standing alone in the sunlight.
He headed straight for her.
“Can we talk?” Raymond called out.
Emilia glanced over at where Theodore’s car was parked, then pointed to a quiet spot nearby, away from the crowd.
They stopped there, standing a few feet apart.
“Why?” Raymond asked.
Emilia knew exactly what he meant, but she didn’t answer right away. Instead, she looked him over, taking in his expression.
“Raymond,” she said, “why did you come back?”
Raymond stayed silent, eyes fixed on her.
“And don’t give me some nonsense about coming back because you heard I got divorced,” she added. “You were doing perfectly well overseas. There was no reason to come back here and get caught up in this mess.”
She held his gaze. “If I’m not wrong, something happened with Cerulion, didn’t it?”
Raymond finally let out a wry laugh. “Sharp as ever. You really are a little fox.”
He reached into his pocket and pulled out a small wooden figurine—a fox, hand-carved.
“For you,” he said, offering it to her. “A little homecoming gift.”
“I thought it was fitting.”
Emilia took the fox from him. It was beautifully crafted, lifelike, but she could tell it was made by his own hands.
