*~Aurora’s POV~*
"Oh, now the tables have turned."
He raised his hands in the air, then let out a hideous laugh. I clenched Heather in my hands, knowing I wouldn’t be able to strike again—not now, not with Heather here with me.
"I give up," I said. It was pointless to fight. Fighting now would be too dangerous. If Heather weren’t here, I’d know exactly what to do—how to get myself out using dark magic. But with her here, things were more complicated. I had to be careful, not act rashly.
I gave him a weak smile, and he nodded approvingly. "Good decision, dear. I knew you were smart. Now, shall we go in? I’d love to introduce you to my demon mates," he said, walking past me. I followed behind him, his long white hair swaying down his back.
I’d never seen a man with hair that long—but did this monster even qualify as a man?
As we got back inside the house, the woman from earlier—the one I’d thrown out of the building—immediately started approaching me, fury burning in her eyes.
There was no stopping her. "Leave me alone. I want to tear her head off—her damn body! How dare she lay her filthy hands on me? You think you’re strong? Let me show you what real strength is!" she barked.
I clenched Heather in my hands, and then five more white figures appeared. They all looked almost identical, though each had slightly different features. I’d say Darius looked a little more handsome than most of them—but they were all pale, with striking blue eyes.
They all turned to me, and my gaze flickered between them. I was nervous, but I refused to show it. Wow, I shouldn’t be nervous now, I told myself.
Then one of them spoke. "You should get her back into the room. George will be mad if he finds out we let her out."
"It wasn’t our fault," The demoness spoke. "She’s just too powerful for us to keep locked in a damn room."
The wolf from earlier stepped forward. "Calm down, Rebecca," Darius said to her.
So her name was Rebecca. Why were they bearing normal names? They were demons.
"It’s more like," one of them replied to my thoughts, "we have demon names, Aurora. We just use common names so we can blend into your world, dear."
I flinched. How did you read my mind?
"That’s my ability," he said. "I can read your mind. You haven’t blocked your thoughts from mine, so I can hear them."
Oh my God. I immediately started trying to control my thoughts. How powerful did he have to be—to read someone’s mind just like that? That was his ability.
I couldn’t help but wonder what the others’ abilities were, especially considering how Darius could create that blinding white flash that tore through my eyes and somehow whisked me away from the high house in an instant.
But we still need to take her back into her room," one of the demons said. "George will get angry if he and the others get back home."
"That should be his punishment for leaving without informing us," Darius muttered.
"Oh, wait," Rebecca turned to Darius. "Does he know we have Heather with us?"
"Heather?" Darius turned sharply to me, and as I spoke her name, I instinctively tightened my hold on her.
"Oh no, I don’t think he does," Darius muttered.
Rebecca’s expression darkened. "He must have gone to New Orleans in search of her. Maybe that’s why he’s not back yet—he’s still looking for her."
"Well, someone should inform him she’s already here," another demon said.
"I will," one of them volunteered—and in a blink, he turned into smoke and vanished.
"Oh so that one can teleport." I nodded.
"Well, I can do that," I thought to myself.
"Oh, you can teleport?" The demon who’d been reading my mind turned toward me with a teasing grin.
I immediately blinked and tried to stop my thoughts from flowing.
Stop thinking, stop thinking.
"Yes, you should do that," he said with a smirk.
I groaned quietly and closed my eyes to shut the voices out.
Darius chuckled. "Don’t drive her crazy," he said, tapping the shoulder of the mind-reading demon.
"Oh, I won’t," the demon replied, laughing.
Then Rebecca stepped forward, her tone calm but commanding. "This way," she said, gesturing with her hand.
I just stood there, stunned.
"Oh, I can’t believe you just commanded Aurora like that," Darius said, his voice laced with mock surprise. "That lady is way too powerful for you to be bossing around, Rebecca."
Rebecca chuckled. "Oh, I know. Not only is she powerful, but she’s also smart. She bounced me out of the room with just a single tornado. Impressive, really. It’s just... such a pity her lover threw her away for some damn wolf."
I froze. My breath hitched.
What?
My lover threw me away for some—
