Leilani.

The weather was somewhat colder today when I – we stepped out of the house and got into Jarek’s car, and maybe it was due to my shivering but Maya wrapped her arms around my shoulder protectively, her warmth seeping through my thick coat as we marched through my

snow-covered lawn.

The drive was to the hospital was quiet, save for Maya’s continuous chatter filling the car and as soon as we got off the car in our arrival at the hospital’s parking lot, I nearly halted in my tracks when I was met with familiar pairs of hostile blue eyes- my birth mother’s, father’s, Chalice’s and Gavin’s; And while their gazes held nothing but contempt for me- well, besides Gavin who was openly ogling at Maya- I could barely return it.

“What is she doing here?” I heard my father ask,

his tone dripping with disdain; and while that should’ve not bothered me, it did… a little.

It just went far to show how deep his contempt for me ran.

My eyes met his just as Chalice muttered; “She’s here to see Kael,” and I saw his frown deepen.

But gone were the days where I feared him. Now, to me, he was nothing more than a shitty man who couldn’t handle his family.

Nor me.

So I glanced away from him and his pathetic little family, my gaze hardening so much that I saw panic fleet into their eyes.

But I didn’t care. I just wanted to be out of here.

I wanted to be as far as possible away from these crazy people!

When we got into an elevator moments later, I couldn’t help but notice the bright shade of red now staining Maya’s face. She looked flushed as hell and pale, and instinctively knowing that it had everything to do with Gavin, I sighed.

Because goddess, I hated that she was stuck between both of us.

But what I hated most was how the moon goddess, probably wanting to have fun, had decided to pair the two together.

We quietly continued our trek to Kael’s ward, and as we did, my heart soon began to race. My chest felt heavy. My breathing too was labored. I wondered if I really wanted to be here… if I really wanted to help him. But putting these thoughts away, I continued to walk in silence.

Hades, I was nervous.

My face was also sweaty despite the cold, and my palms were clammy. As if noticing my discomfort,

Jay held my hand all through, squeezing it at intervals as if to say; “I’ve got you,” especially when it began to shake.

We stopped right in front of the room when we ran into Caelum whose eyes were fixed pointedly at mine and Jay’s clasped hand.

He seethed; “You came.”

His voice was tinged with… jealousy; And because it was not a question I wanted to respond to- and even if it was, Caelum was not someone I wanted to be talking to- I subconsciously held Jay’s hand tighter as I drawled;

“Yes, I did. So if you don’t mind, excuse me. I only have ten minutes to spend here.”

His eyes darkened at my words and his nostrils flared. For a very brief moment, he looked like he was about to say something nasty to me, but before the words would come out, his eyes shifted from my face to Jarek’s and he gulped,

whilst moving away.

“Nevermind.” He spat.

I instantly felt the urge to remind him that I was indeed ‘never going to mind’, but biting on my

tongue, I held back and turned to Maya and Jay. I whispered;

“Let’s go.”

“No, we’ll wait here.” Jarek answered stiffly, his eyes fixated on an uncomfortable-looking Caelum. I turned to frown at him but said nothing as I let go of his hand and walked in, my eyes widening slightly when I saw Zevran leaving against the bed, his eyes sunken as he held onto Kael’s hand.

When he saw he approach, he quickly straightened up and drawled; “Thank you for coming.” He said, but I didn’t respond, I simply

nodded.

-See, that’s the difference between him and the other dunce outside!

I walked past him to stand beside Kael’s bed, and looking at him like this, I couldn’t help but feel a little sad. I tried to tell myself that I felt bad because I’d been the last person to see him before the accident, but the more I thought about it, I knew it was more than that.

“He’s been slipping in and out of consciousness. He’s barely conscious though as he just wakes up sometimes to call out to you.” Zevran said from behind me.

His words surprisingly made me feel… nothing.

I stared blankly at Kael’s face, touched his forehead gently and leaned closer to whisper; “He looks like he’s going to he just fine.”

“Leilani-” just then, he whispered under his breath, catching me by surprise.

My eyes widened as I turned to Zevran who immediately shrugged at me. He explained; “Well, that’s how he’s been calling out to you.”

I placed my hand over my chest to calm my raging heart, and after a moment when I was sure my breath was even, I said; “Oh, he’d wake up in a few days and forget all these things he’s been doing.” I said slowly, then pointing at Kael’s hand, I added; “See, he just moved. He’s okay. So stop stressing it.” And with that, I leaned away to cross my arms over my chest.

On the way here, I’d felt something akin to

sympathy for these males, but on arrival, that pity had turned into something else… something more

vicious.

I turned to glance at Kael one more time, a small smile playing at my lips as I drawled coldly; “You should wake up, you know. Your wedding is in a few days, and I have a gift for you.”

Zevran cocked his eyebrows at me then but said nothing. I simply nodded to him and made to walk out of the room, but as soon as I turned away, Kael’s fingers grabbed at mine.

I gasped from shock, not missing the way Zevran’s eyes widened in surprise. He muttered something under his breath then, but deciding that I didn’t want to be a part of this madness, I pried him off me and left, only to halt in my tracks again when I ran into my parents and Chalice.

Gavin now was nowhere to be found. Neither was

Maya.

My eyes travelled over their heads to meet Jarek’s soft gaze, and I frowned when my mother slightly nudged me, her voice dripping with

disappointment as she seethed; “You know you’re not meant to be here, right?”

“Yes, I do.” I answered coldly, making her face fall
