Flipping further, she saw photos of herself at six, seven, eight... all the way to adulthood.
She had a cool personality and disliked having her picture taken, so there weren't many. But every time a photo was taken, whether candid or a formal group shot, her grandfather had it developed and saved, a yearly testament to her growth.
They were all slowly growing up, and her grandfather was slowly growing old.
Unconsciously, Estelle’s vision blurred. She took a deep breath and continued to look.
Gabriel’s photos were much like hers, a few from each year, some solo shots and some group photos. His collection was more complete, though, even including pictures from when he was born.
After a moment, he closed the album and looked up with a faint smile. “I used to be so impatient when we took these photos, but looking at them now, I realize how meaningful they are.”
Old Mr. Jarvis sipped his tea and asked Estelle, “I originally intended to put this album in your dowry, but after much thought, I couldn't bear to part with it. If you want it, I can have a copy made for you.”
Estelle looked up, her clear eyes glistening. “There’s no need for a copy. Just keep it here, Grandpa. I can always come back to look at it whenever I want.”
Old Mr. Jarvis smiled kindly. “Alright!”
Gabriel pointed to a photo and said to Estelle, “This was when I had just taken you to the training camp. Grandpa was worried and insisted on seeing you, so I snapped a quick picture. You were so tan and had a scrape on your face. When Grandpa saw it, he called me immediately and yelled at me, demanding I send you home.”
Estelle leaned over to see the photo. In it, her forehead was wrapped in a bandage, and her face was scraped up. She did look a bit rough.
She was surprised, having no memory of such a photo ever being taken.
Looking at the picture, the memories of her first days at the training camp flashed through her mind like a film reel.
Many forgotten moments became clear once again.
After that photo was one of her and Gabriel, a group picture taken when they came home for the holidays that year.
She had grown a lot taller. Though still thin, her back was straight, and her body had gained strength.
