Fiona knew exactly why the counselor was making such a scene. Losing her position with their class meant losing her connection to Amy—and all the little perks and kickbacks that came with it.
“Mr. Garcia, you can’t just fire me! I’ve worked so hard at this school. Maybe I don’t have a long list of achievements, but at least I’ve put in the effort. You can’t just erase everything I’ve done,” the counselor pleaded, her voice quivering with desperation.
She shot Fiona a venomous look, like this whole mess was Fiona’s fault. Like, if Fiona hadn’t stirred things up, none of this would be happening.
“Mr. Garcia, I’ve been loyal for years. How can you be so cold?” she continued, almost whining.
Meanwhile, Fiona didn’t say a word. She just sat quietly off to the side, earbuds in, completely uninterested in the counselor’s theatrics. Honestly, even if Mr. Garcia didn’t agree to assign her a new counselor, it didn’t matter—she’d already gotten under the woman’s skin, and that was enough.
Besides, after today, the counselor wouldn’t dare help Amy so openly again. If she wanted to keep her job, she’d have to watch her step. There were plenty of people waiting to take her spot.
Mr. Garcia looked torn. For all her faults, the counselor was good at her job—she got things done and students liked her teaching style. Replacing her would definitely hurt her career.
“Ms. Fiona, how about this,” he said at last. “I’ll issue a formal warning. From now on, you, Tyler, and Nash don’t have to answer to her. Does that work for you?”
It was as good as a promise.
Fiona pulled out her earbuds. That actually sounded pretty fair.
“Sure,” she said, her voice cool and calm.
