Fiona didn’t know the mother and son in front of her, but after Jane’s phone call earlier, it wasn’t hard to guess who they were.
Every wealthy family had the same basic rules: illegitimate kids could never truly be part of the family. They might live comfortably, but they’d never have any real power. Jane, though, was different. Her mother’s family was powerful, so even though Jane wasn’t a man, she could still inherit the Kidd family business. In these circles, it was all about talent and bloodline—not gender.
But there were always people looking for shortcuts, like the pair standing here now. Ever since Jane’s father went to prison, their status in the Kidd family had tanked. When he’d been around, they’d enjoyed all the perks, but now? No one paid attention to them. Even the servants probably just tolerated them. Jane, on the other hand, had her grandfather’s support and was the Kidd family’s next heir. Her future looked brighter than ever.
Fiona had no interest in dealing with these two. She glanced at the time—it was almost 7:30. She needed to meet Nash. Without another word, she turned to leave.
The woman noticed and quickly nudged her son, urging him to block Fiona’s way. Then, raising her voice and waving her arms, she started drawing attention from the crowd.
It was busy outside the school gates. Food stalls lined the street, students and passersby stopped to see what was going on.
“Everyone, please help us!” the woman shouted dramatically. “This college girl—she did something to get my husband thrown in jail! We can barely see him now. She’s only after our money. If you want money, just say so! Why ruin us like this?”
With a few words, she twisted the story—like she was admitting Jane’s father cheated, and Fiona was the other woman.
What the woman hated most was being reminded of her own past—as the mistress who forced her way into the Kidd family. Because of that, she was always an outsider in high society, ignored and looked down on whenever she tried to join the other ladies.
Fiona saw the flash of panic on her face and just felt bored. After all these years playing the part of a rich wife, she still didn’t have any real poise or dignity.
Some people are just born low, Fiona thought. No matter how hard they try, they can’t change what’s in their bones.
“That’s Fiona, isn’t it?” someone in the crowd whispered. “She’s always in the middle of something. Nothing good ever happens when she’s around.”
