Julian’s Estate
Night had slowly conquered the day, draping the estate in silence. Julian returned alone, his assistant occupied with another task.
His shoulders sagged under the weight of exhaustion as he climbed the stairs. Stepping into the study, he paused, drawing a deep breath as though air itself might restore his strength.
Click.
The chandelier above flickered to life, its soft glow spilling across the room and painting his tired frame in pale light.
With measured steps, Julian moved to the large mahogany table at the centre of the study.
The table bore the marks of his life: several business books neatly stacked to one side, a single portrait of his mother and sister in the middle, and project files carefully arranged on the opposite end.
A reading lamp close to the frame’s portrait, at the centre was a few other files waiting for him.
He pulled out the chair and settled down, burying himself into a sea of files Maxwell had gathered for him.
Slowly, he opened them, studying them one by one. There were details of the prominent doctors they could lay their hands on in Country Y.
Page after page revealed their credentials, their successes, their failures.
He needed someone exceptional, a doctor capable of handling Jessica’s treatment. Yet the deeper he read, the heavier his disappointment grew. None of them were good enough.
He rubbed his brow frustratingly. He had already asked one of the Anderson special team of doctors to come over.
At any cost, he wished she could wake up. His father was already getting the wrong idea. With a deep sigh, he stood up, filling a glass of wine for himself, he strolled over to the balcony of the study.
Standing quietly outside the balcony, he let the soft gentle breeze of the night wrap him in tenderness as his thoughts drifted to his conversation with his father the day after the accident.
Seeing Josh’s call that day wasn’t surprising, but what was surprising was his statement.
"Julian, your sister seems to be in danger." He stated, shocking the hell out Julian who felt his breath hitch.
He had thought someone might have told him about it, but what he said next left him stumped.
"I might not know this feeling in the past," he said, "but then it was that same feeling I had the day I lost her and now, I am quite certain your sister is in danger."
Julian wanted to explain, to say he was overthinking, to tell him it was well, to say it was all his imagination, but then the instinct of the Anderson had never been wrong.
"Julian, you don’t have to hide it because I know, but I just hope you will tell me the truth...is she still breathing," his voice cracked with emotion.
Julian knew he couldn’t hide it for long. With nothing more to do about it, he had told him the truth of her being in an accident, but he kept away the details.
From then on, Josh had been a shadow of himself. He didn’t want to think of it as ill luck but had come to believe fate didn’t want to give him a chance of meeting her.
The steady vibration of his phone broke his thought. Rubbing his throbbing temple, he pulled out the phone from his pocket, but his hand paused at the name flashing on the screen.
"Dad."
With a deep exhale, he picked it up. "Hello," he breathed, his voice hoarse.
"Julian, are you in a meeting?" Josh asked steadily.
"No. Are you okay?" Julian asked. He had thought about calling him after his arrangement, but who would have thought he would call first.
"Julian, what exactly is going on with your sister?" He asked, his voice deep with worry and exhaustion.
"You dreamt of Mom again?" Julian asked tentatively.
"..."
Over the years, Josh had never mentioned seeing Nora in his dreams, but since the accident it was as though she had come back to life...always in his dreams...always in his thoughts.
"Dad, you worry yourself so much...Can you just be calm?" Julian tried to explain.
"Julian, I am coming over to Country Y tomorrow. Arrange someone to pick me up from the airport, and you can go about your business."
"But Dad?" Julian tried to persuade, but Josh’s voice stopped him mid-speech. "I lost once and this time I am not going to lose her."
Julian’s hand stilled, the agony and regret in his voice left him with no words to dissuade the man who had lost so much.
Over the years, Josh had not just lost a lover but his heart, happiness, and even half of his life span.
It can only be said he was living just with the hope of finding the lost daughter and the presence of his son.
