Davis watched her go upstairs, his shoulders sagging with relief. He rubbed his brow. He had walked over to her just in hope of stopping her from getting a glimpse of the document.
The situation last night had gone beyond his expectations. By the time he returned from the club last night, Jessica was already a disheveled mess.
She was sitting upright on the bed, her head tightly clasped in her hands, her body riddled with sweat, some strands of her hair falling across her face, sticking to her forehead, her eyes hollow and unfocused.
She was a mess.
Davis’s heart stopped, he couldn’t help imagining the worst-case scenario. From his discussion with Richard, he couldn’t rule out the idea of Jessica trying to trigger her memory herself. 𝚏𝗿𝗲𝐞𝐰𝚎𝕓𝐧𝚘𝘃𝗲𝐥.𝐜𝚘𝕞
To minimize the damage, he had called over the Dean, who came and administered her with sedatives to calm her nerves and reduce the stress on her brain.
And through the night, he had kept vigil, watching over her. To erase everything that happened, he had to remake the bed, keeping it clean.
Unbeknownst to him, Jessica had assumed he never returned.
"You can finish up the rest." Davis said to Ethan, who nodded silently.
Taking the staircase, he made his way to the nursery.
Meanwhile, Jessica returned to the bedroom and settled down on the bed. She couldn’t shake the feeling gnawing at her.
Davis was probably hiding something from her, but whatever he was hiding seemed to have a link to her.
But recalling the exhaustion etched across his features, she sighed deeply. "I guess I have to do something about it," she muttered before heading straight for a bath.
By the time Davis returned from the nursery, she was already set for the day. Rather than the tired and worn-out frame, she looked more lively.
"I...I have an appointment with my...with Ju...Julian." Jessica stuttered.
Davis raised a brow, she took a deep breath and continued. "To visit my mother."
Davis nodded. "We go together," he answered.
"Ahh!" Jessica stared at him in surprise.
"Have we..." but she stopped herself mid-sentence.
"You don’t worry, we’ve always gone there together."
Jessica’s eyes lit up. "When was the last time I was there?"
"A few days before the accident, you had gone there to tell her about the kids and the Santiagos’ welcoming banquet," he said.
She felt an unusual relief washing over her. If it was because he had accompanied her in the past or the suggestion to go with her, it didn’t matter.
"Babe, after the visit...we are going to the hospital," Davis said.
Jessica’s hand subconsciously clenched by her side. "Hospital?" she said, already feeling weary.
Her thoughts raced, recalling the mention of a therapist moments ago, a bitter smile curling up her lips.
"Had he already grown tired of her memory loss?" she mused, but on a second thought, she braced herself.
"Why go to the hospital? It’s not the date for my check-up?" she asked.
Davis exhaled sharply, he slowly took her hand in his and led her over to the bed. Sitting down, he pulled her to sit on his lap. "Babe, Richard told me about it."
Her gaze snapped to him. "He...did?"
Davis nodded, he would just have told her, he wanted to, but he was afraid she would feel insecure or pressured.
After thinking about it, he had decided to take the easiest step, tell her the truth and see if that’s what she really wanted.
Seeing her dazed, "Babe, do you know it doesn’t matter how long it takes to recover your memory, and I never care about that...but then if you must trigger your memory...I prefer we go to the hospital, adopt a safer method."
Jessica took a deep breath, momentarily closing her eyes. She would have accepted that it doesn’t matter, but for her, it’s so important.
