Forced Marriage: My Wife, My Redemption novel Chapter 438

Chapter 438: I will sign...

Davis’ head snapped to her face, his eyes widened but slowly dimmed as he met her gaze, probing and doubtful, though her words "I Remember!" continually echoed in Davis’ ear even long after she had spoken.

"Babe," his voice trembled, "are you being serious?" he asked.

Jessica only nodded, her eyes stung; she had hoped and prayed earnestly for this moment, and experiencing it now left her with mixed emotions swirling in her heart.

She felt relief wash over her, and yet another sense of responsibility pressing against her.

While trapped in her thoughts, Davis pulled her into a tight hug.

"That’s great." His voice cracked as he repeated "That’s great."

But the next moment, he felt a sense of guilt wash over him. Slowly, he pulled away from her, his head hung low and his gaze lowered. "I wasn’t there to protect you."

He took a deep breath. "I’m sorry," he murmured.

Jessica stared at him, stumped as she blinked her eyes. "Are you... being... serious?" she stuttered.

Davis nodded. "I’m serious." His gaze settled into the distance as he continued, "It’s the duty of a man to protect his wife," he muttered.

All this while, he had always blamed himself for not being around to protect her when it mattered.

Maybe if he hadn’t gone for the summit, or probably if his plane hadn’t been delayed, he would have arrived earlier.

This apology he had always kept in his heart because she wouldn’t understand it, but now she could remember all that transpired before and after, he had to say it.

Jessica smiled, her hand snaked around his waist, her head resting on his chest. "You are not wrong, neither was it your fault."

She shrugged her shoulders. "Besides, I was the one that suggested the summit, and you never wanted to go," she explained earnestly.

With the situation at that time, it would be no doubt the same would have happened even if he was around.

She was a bit grateful that Santiago’s butler had called earlier, creating the opportunity for the incident to happen in the daylight.

Unlike the days she leaves the Allen Group at night... maybe it would have been dire.

Her only lingering pain was the driver.

"How about my driver?" she asked painfully.

"He had taken most of the impact when the car was going off the cliff; with multiple fractures, he was barely breathing by the time they got to the hospital."

"Though... he remained awake until he was told you are out of danger." His voice cracked. "Then he gave up."

Jessica’s tears fell. While the scene of him leaving his seat to shield her at the back, throwing in a suit to cushion her stomach, he had really paid a terrible price.

Davis felt his heart ache; he wasn’t there, but he was able to meet the driver, he had been the one to tell him she was out of danger, and he gave up in his presence... a sight that has been engraved into his memory.

Softly, he patted her back, soothing her. Though he couldn’t say anything.

"His family?" she asked amidst tears.

"We are taking the responsibility for them, that’s the least I could do."

"They have been relocated here, and the wife has been employed in the company."

Jessica nodded. "I never knew. I would like to see them."

"Alright, I will arrange for that once you are ready," Davis assured.

Seeing her accept the truth was supposed to make Davis feel relieved, but it had only succeeded in making him feel pressured as well as strengthening his decision to love and protect her.

Jessica abruptly pulled away from his embrace. Davis’ brow furrowed. "What is the problem?" he probed while searching her face for a clue.

"The woman?" she asked, glancing around. "Can you get down the car?"

"What woman are you talking about?" Davis probed, his heart raced, uttering a silent prayer. It shouldn’t be a matter of recalling false memories.

Jessica pointed at the scene of the accident. "I mean that woman that just had an accident?"

Davis sighed with relief; it wasn’t what he was thinking. "I don’t know, she seems to have been taken to the hospital."

Jessica’s heart dropped. "How long since the accident?"

"One hour," Davis clipped while he stepped down from the car.

"Find out the hospital she was taken to, let’s go," she said, already alighting from the car.

Davis glanced at her, his brow raised inquisitively. "What?" "Now?" "After her?"

He asked in one breath.

Didn’t she just say she wanted to visit the mall? How had it suddenly turned into chasing after an accident victim?

While Davis stood watching her, dumbfounded, Jessica was already making calls to a few subordinates, asking her to be traced.

"Hubby, the nearest hospital here should be Marist Hospital, right?"
