Benedict
Monday morning, the buzz around the school is Scarlet’s birthday party. As a Beta turned Alpha female, and someone that a lot of people like, most of the males in the school were hoping to be mated to her.
I’m not part of Scarlet’s inner circle, so I wasn’t invited to her party, but from what I heard, she did not find her mate. However, she apparently didn’t expect to either, so she wasn’t disappointed.
Most everyone who was at her party last night is exhausted today in school. I also heard the party changed dates from Saturday to Sunday to accommodate ‘everyone
‘ Since I know how close Scarlet and Sloane are and that both of them were in Alpha Waylon’s pack Friday night, I assume Sloane was the ‘everyone’ that Scarlet was accommodating.
‘What is she wearing?’ Marrok asks, his tone on the verge of a growl. Since he rarely pays attention in school unless it has to do with Ellis, Sloane, Slade, or Bethany, my head snaps up to see what he’s looking at.
Sloane never dresses to try and gain attention, and she never wears make-up that I’ve ever seen, so the necklace hanging around her neck is like a beacon.
I feel a wave of jealousy that I’ve never felt before, and I have to stop Marrok from stomping over to sniff it and seeif the scent of the person who gave it to her still lingers on it.
Who the fuck is giving Sloane jewelry? And more importantly, who is worthy enough of her attention that she’s wearing their jewelry.
My mind begins spinning with possibilities. It was Scarlet’s birthday, so she didn’t give the gift to Stoane. If not her, then who? I start going through the mental list of males who went to the party this weekend.
‘Maybe it was someone in Alpha Waylon’s pack, Marrok growls.
Fuck, that leaves it wide open. There are any number of unmated males in Alpha Waylon’s pack.
“Alpha, is everything okay?” the girl I was just talking to asks. I don’t bother to look at her.
“Yeah, why?”
“Uh, your aura just got really strong. Did I offend you?” she asks.
“What?” I ask, looking down and realizing that there’s a space around me where people are keeping their distance.
“Sorry,” I say, pulling my aura back in. “Sorry about that. I have to go.”
“Sure, Alpha. I’ll see you on Saturday.””Sure,” I say, walking to where Sloane was just standing However, when I get there, she’s gone.
Thankfully, have multiple classes with her and since we’re in a competition for Valedictorian, I have a reason to talk to her.
What in the Moon Goddess’ realm is wrong with me? I’ve never needed a reason to talk to a girl before. Girts have always tripped over themselves to talk to me, not the other way around.
‘Sloane’s different, Marrok says, which makes me stop.
‘What does that mean?’ I ask him.
‘She just is, he grumbles.
Thanks for making that statement as clear as mud, l growl as we enter our first class.
This class is one where I sit behind her. I sit in my seat and lean forward.
“Hey, Sloane. How was your weekend?”
“It was good, Benedict. How was yours?”
“Good. I know you said you had plans. Everything was good?” The moment I say it, I wonder if her “plans” were a date. I’ve never seen anyone show interest in Sloane. If it was a date, it would have to be someone from Alpha Waylon’s pack.”Yep,” she says, giving me nothing.
“New necklace?” I ask, fighting the growl that threatens to come out.
Sloane smiles, a soft, beautiful smile that rivals the one a saw last week for the most amazing smile in the whole fucking world. She reaches up and wraps her hand around the pendant.
“Yeah, it is,” she says, her voice softer than I’ve ever heard.
If I thought I knew what jealousy was, I had no idea. It’s hot, suffocating, and all-consuming.
Sloane turns, frowning at me. “Are you okay?”
“Fine,” I growl, sitting back.
No, I’m not okay. I am so far from okay that can’t even focus in class.
“Dude, what is going on with you? Everyone is talking about your off-the-fucking-charts aura today,” Ellis says to me at lunchtime.
“I’m fine,” I growl with enough heat that Ellis raises his hands and backs off.
