“I’m not interested in anything related to your family,” Athena said coldly, curling her lips into a faint smirk. “If you’re afraid of me, you don’t have to be.”
With that, she brushed past Patricia, not intending to waste another word.
But just as she was about to leave, a woman’s soft voice stopped her. “So, you’re Athena.”
Athena stopped and turned toward the voice.
A woman with delicate features and perfect poise stood there, a calm smile on her lips. “You probably don’t know me,” the woman said smoothly. “I’m Maya Rice.”
She paused, her smile deepening. “Zaden’s ex–girlfriend.”
Athena said nothing for a long moment.
Athena hadn’t expected that the woman she and Zaden had argued about at lunch, the one who stirred up those uneasy feelings, would turn out to be a Rices.
That meant Maya might actually be her half–sister. The thought hit her like a wave. For a second, she couldn’t find the right words.
Maya noticed her silence and smiled, confident she’d struck a nerve.
“I know you’ve gotten close to Zaden lately,” she said softly. “But now I’m back for him. If you don’t want to embarrass yourself later, I suggest you should understand your place now.”
Her tone was gentle, but her words carried a sharp edge. “I don’t want you anywhere near Zaden. Do you understand me?”
Maya was every bit the spoiled heiress. She was born with a silver spoon, pretty and with polished manners. She spoke like a lady from high society, soft and gentle. But underneath that charm, Athena could clearly sense it. This woman was dangerous.
Athena suddenly laughed.
When she was with Lewis, he had been secretly seeing Nina on the side. Athena had never faced this kind of scene before.
Now, Maya actually stood in front of her, warning her like she was the other woman.
Maya probably had no idea she was Zaden’s lawful wife. They were officially married.
What right did an ex have to lecture her?

Athena said slowly, “I don’t think I can do that. I can live my life how I choose. You just said it yourself. You’re Zaden’s ex. Coming up to me and saying those things, don’t you think you’re overstepping?”
Maya didn’t expect Athena to snap back like that.
Her face went cold, and she clenched her fist.
Athena was tougher than she thought. She didn’t care about the warning and looked fearless. It made Maya angry.
Patricia hated to see her daughter lose ground.
She was ready to back her up, but Athena didn’t give her the chance.
Athena didn’t even look at them and walked away.
“That little witch is way too arrogant! Just like her shameless mother!” Patricia snapped, losing her composure completely, and cursed in anger.
Maya patted her mother’s hand to calm her. “Mom, don’t be upset. She seems hard to deal with, but I’m not worried.”
“Maya,” Patricia said, voice low and urgent. “Athena is dangerous. Zaden hasn’t had any women close to him these years. She’s the only one who made it into his life. Move fast. If you don’t, that shameless girl might steal him away.”
Maya’s brow tightened.
The reason Maya rushed back so suddenly was simple. Zaden hadn’t replied to her messages. Worse, when she checked again, she realized he had blocked her. This discovery pushed her over the edge. She had to come back and see for herself.
All this time, she had believed Zaden would still be waiting for her, just like before.
Years ago, she was the one who looked down on him. Back then, Zaden had nothing. He wasn’t the heir of the Storms. Aside from his good looks, he didn’t have much to show for himself.
But things had changed. In just a few short years, he had become a man with real power, the future head of the Storms.
Now, Maya regretted everything.
“Mom, wait here,” she said. “I’m going to buy a few gifts and visit Beverly. She might’ve been upset with me in the past, but if she compares me to Athena, I’m sure she’ll prefer me. After all, I’m an heiress. Our families are actually well matched.”
