**Title: Her Rise 309**
A voice broke the spell of Maya’s swirling thoughts, snapping her back to the present moment.
Kit glanced over at Preston, his confusion evident. What had sparked this sudden interest from his brother regarding Maya’s predicament at the hospital? It was perplexing, to say the least.
Preston had always maintained a certain distance, often coming across as cold and unapproachable. Yet, his brilliance and success cast a long shadow that few dared to question. He rarely engaged in trivial matters, such as Maya’s ongoing bet with Athena. So, when Maya announced her plans to head to the hospital that very morning, it was surprising when Preston decided to accompany her.
This unexpected turn of events piqued Kit’s curiosity, compelling him to tag along.
Maya turned her gaze towards Preston, her eyes narrowing slightly in suspicion. “Preston, Kit has a point. You’ve never cared about these things before. What’s behind this sudden change of heart?”
Preston’s expression remained unyielding, his voice steady and deliberate. “I want to understand what kind of person could make my sister so anxious. I also want to see your strategy for winning.”
Maya’s lips pursed at his words.
She was reluctant to concede that Athena possessed any real skill. In her mind, Athena was merely an annoyance, nothing more than a fleeting obstacle.
After all, she had taken great care to ensure that Athena would remain stranded abroad. With the crowd gathered today, Athena’s absence would inevitably be interpreted as a sign of cowardice. Everyone would assume she had backed out at the last moment.
And given the scandalous videos Maya had leaked, Athena would find herself the perfect target for ridicule.
“Preston,” Maya declared with a hint of pride, “Athena is stuck overseas. Too bad for you; you won’t get to witness anything.”
Kit’s eyes widened in disbelief. Athena was truly trapped abroad?
She hadn’t reached out to him for assistance. Not a single word had come through.
Had she really chosen to sever all ties with him because of Maya?
Preston’s expression darkened, a flicker of concern passing through his eyes.
He could sense that his sister was about to face disappointment, but uncovering Athena’s true capabilities was of greater importance to him.
Turning to Maya, Kit asked, “Did you really convince Preston to stop Athena from coming home?”
Maya’s frown deepened, clearly irritated by the question. She swiftly turned to Preston, her voice rising in complaint. “See? This is exactly what I mean! He always sides with Athena. I don’t even know which family he thinks he belongs to!”
Kit felt himself freeze in that moment. Since childhood, Preston had always been the one person he never dared to challenge.
He immediately fell silent.
Yet, he recalled that Athena had traveled abroad with Zaden. Perhaps Zaden would find a way to rectify the situation.
As time passed, murmurs filled the room, the crowd growing increasingly restless. Athena still hadn’t arrived, and assumptions began to circulate. Most believed she was too frightened to show her face.
