**Chapter 7**
Perhaps it was true that Garrett didn’t harbor the deep affection for me that I had once believed he did. Yet, one thing was certain: he would never allow Melody to engage in her deceitful antics while hiding behind his back.
The thought of her allowing other men to touch me was intolerable.
In the past, he had been drawn to Melody’s charm—her innocence and vivacity had captivated him.
But now, as he stood there, all he could see was a cunning serpent, her beauty merely a mask for her treachery.
No matter how much disdain one develops, spending years together inevitably leaves behind some remnants of feeling.
Melody had thought she was being discreet, never truly anticipating that Garrett would uncover her betrayal so swiftly.
For a fleeting moment, panic flickered across her features. She stepped closer, her fingers gripping Garrett’s arm with a desperate urgency.
“Garrett, please! I love you far too much. I was terrified she would take you away from me.”
Her voice trembled, laced with desperation.
“I’m so sorry. Just… don’t be angry, okay?”
Garrett, feeling a cold detachment wash over him, shrugged her off with a sharp movement.
“You wanted to punish her, didn’t you? Fine. But why did it have to unfold like this?”
Tears pooled in Melody’s eyes, glistening like jewels under the dim light.
“She used her body to keep you by her side for two long years. I was terrified you’d grow accustomed to her presence…”
“And I merely followed your instructions—had them conduct a teaching experiment. I never anticipated they would take it that far…”
“I realize now that I was wrong. Please, just forgive me this once. I swear I’ll never do it again.”
This was her usual tactic—playing the victim to elicit sympathy. But this time, her ploy fell flat against Garrett’s resolve.
“Stay here and recuperate. Don’t leave unless it’s absolutely necessary.”
With that, Garrett didn’t linger for another moment. He stormed out, a whirlwind of emotions swirling within him.
Once home, he ripped his tie loose in a fit of frustration, striding straight to the bathroom.
As the thick steam enveloped him, my face from that fateful day materialized in his mind’s eye.
Shattered, hopeless, and seething with hatred…
