It had been days since anyone saw a government truck or boat.

Outside, everything was silent–no cars, no people, not even the sound of birds.

Caroline and her group rushed to the window. She pulled out her binoculars and looked down. Three massive off–road trucks were driving toward the building.

From their floor, they couldn’t see much detail.

The vehicles looked heavily modified–giant tires, reinforced metal plating, and snow chains wrapped tight around the wheels.

Even on the icy roads, they moved smoothly like it was nothing.

Caroline raised an eyebrow slightly, unsure if things were really turning out the way she thought they might.

Down below, the remaining survivors started cheering.

They thought rescue had finally come.

People ran out of the buildings, shouting, “Take me to the shelter! Please, I want to go to the shelter!”

A gunshot cracked through the air, echoing across the air.

“Bang!”

For a moment, everyone froze. The people around the building, who had just started to move, stood still in shock.

Most of them were just ordinary folks. The only guns they’d ever seen were on TV or online.

None of them had ever heard a real gunshot before–until now.

And then, as if the world itself wanted to silence them, snow began to fall.

Thick, white flakes drifted down from the sky, as big as feathers, scattering in the wind.

“Don’t move! Stay right where you are! Anyone moves, and I’ll blow his head off!”

A huge man jumped out of the jeep. He wore a thick mink coat, and a long scar cut straight down his face.

He was fierce, rough enough to make anyone tremble. But when he reached the back seat, everything about him changed.

He opened the door carefully, even smiling as he said in a respectful tone, “Mrs. Lowland, please watch your step.”

Yes—these weren’t government vehicles. They belonged to the Lowlands.

And the woman sitting in the back seat was Patricia.

Ever since the world fell apart, Patricia had been worried sick about her grandson.

Jonathan was the only direct heir of her eldest son.

That boy was his future and hope.

But when the acid rain came, Patricia stumbled upon a great opportunity, something that could make their family rich and powerful again.

They were so busy chasing that fortune, no one had time to look for Jonathan.

Besides, he’d been living downtown, in the business district. There was food, there was shelter -she thought he’d be fine.

When the government finally built a shelter, Patricia had asked people she knew to look out for Jonathan and bring him there.

But the message that came back crushed her. Jonathan had never arrived.

So she came to the building herself to look for him.

The moment she stepped out of the car and walked toward the tower, she froze. Jonathan was lying right there on the ground–dead.

His face was turned upward, eyes wide open, frozen in horror. A dark pool of blood spread

beneath him.

His hands and feet were gone–just smooth, round stumps where they used to be.

The frozen blood had fused with the ice below, turning him into a gruesome sculpture.

“Jonathan! My grandson!”

Patricia dropped to her knees and screamed, her voice raw with grief.

Her cries echoed across the silent, empty land.

Her body shook as she pushed herself up, glaring at the large man beside her. “Find them. Find the one who killed him! I don’t care what it takes!”

The man nodded solemnly.

He raised a hand, and six more men climbed out of the vehicles.

They were all armed and tall—each easily over six feet–with thick, solid builds that made them look like soldiers.

Judging by their formation, they could probably level the whole building if they wanted to.

“Mrs. Lowland,” said the leader gently, “please wait in the car. We’ll bring Mr. Jonathan out and take him home.”

Patricia’s sobs began to quiet. She closed her eyes, took a few shaky breaths, and tears kept streaming down her face.

After a moment, she whispered, “Be careful. D–don’t hurt him.”

Then she walked slowly back to the car.

The leader gave a firm nod. “Bring the tools. We’re getting Mr. Jonathan out of there.”

“Yes, captain!” the men answered in unison.

Caroline stood on the rooftop with Tyler and Kay, watching everything unfold below.

Even Patricia’s wailing carried all the way up–the world was so quiet now that every sound echoed through the air.

“The Lowlands are here,” Caroline said, glancing sideways at Tyler.

Tyler’s face betrayed no emotion. “What does that have to do with me?”

Caroline looked at him, her expression calm but serious. “Sorry,” she said softly. “But today, it actually does.”
