The moment Jet heard there was going to be a fight, he tensed up for a second, then got excited. “I forgot I’m a bird! Flies are on my menu. What am I scared of? Human, let’s fight together!”

Caroline ruffled the feathers on top of Jet’s head. He looked like ridiculously cute.

Their compound eyes were blood–red, and their faces were covered in nasty, long hair.

Their mouthparts, which were usually hard to see, were twitching with a creepy click–click sound, like they could drop down any second and take a bite out of Caroline and the others.

The first wave hit. Jet shot into the air and hurled a few fireballs.

The heat hit the flies‘ wings, burning them to ash.

In a blink, a dozen dropped.

Raven seemed to have teamed up with Jet. He used gravity to knock down over a hundred flies. Jet swooped in and torched whole swathes.

Caroline used a fire ability and joined in the fun of roasting.

Soon, the rotten smell around them was completely drowned out by the scent of burned bugs.

Not that either smell was pleasant.

But no time to care. Seeing hundreds of dead flies, Caroline was thrilled. Another huge batch of wall–building material to take back!

Jet had never used his ability so freely. He was basically having the time of his life in the air.

He kept spitting out fireballs one after another, spinning and flying up and down.

Jet chirped twice, clearly still enjoying himself.

Then he turned left to lure more flies.

on the ground.

“How many are left?” Caroline asked Jet, who was flying above.

She could tell he had something on his mind–he kept circling.

“There’s still a lot. It looks like all the flies in Hornvale didn’t have any place to live anywhere else and were driven here.”

Caroline nodded lightly.

Burning the flies was fun, but it was also a good way for Jet to practice fighting.

After all, Jet hadn’t participated in many battles.

Weak, numerous mutant creatures like the flies were perfect for Jet to get hands–on experience.

Once things were mostly cleared out, Caroline took out the special anti–mutant fly medicine Nelson had made.

She planned to have Jet drop it inside the swarm and let it spread. After a while, she’d use her ability to run along the walls and rooftops and gather the energy from all the fly corpses in the trash piles, storing only the energy and leaving the bodies behind.

Caroline explained her plan and handed the medicine to Jet.

Jet squirmed, like he had something to say.

“What’s wrong?”

“Human, it smells so good. The roasted flies smell amazing…” Jet sounded embarrassed, and his voice got quieter and quieter.
