Caroline already knew about this. In her last life, the military had eventually switched to gold currency, but this time, everything was happening much sooner.
Far sooner.
Even the construction of massive military bases was ahead of schedule.
It had to be her rebirth–and her cooperation with the army–that allowed them to dodge certain disasters.
And Crow’s rebirth had changed things even further. His warnings about the apocalypse had given the military a roadmap for what was coming.
“Thanks, Haroldson. I appreciate it,” Caroline said with a soft smile.
Haroldson chuckled. “You’re welcome, Caroline. You wouldn’t believe how many soldiers look up to you now. When they found out I knew you, they were all jealous.”
He grinned and jerked his head toward the mall.
Caroline followed his gaze and spotted two young soldiers peeking out from a window, their faces lit with excitement.
When they realized she’d seen them, they burst into awkward laughter and ducked out of view.
The ones standing with Haroldson looked about his age–some even reminded her of Denton. Every one of them carried that restless, youthful spark that made people naturally like them.
Caroline smiled faintly and shook her head.
She might’ve looked 20–something on the outside, but after living two lives, she felt well into her 30s.
Haroldson was still fussing over Raven, rubbing his thick fur. Then he reached into his pocket and pulled out a military ration can.
Caroline was about to stop him. Raven had just gorged himself inside the storage space
earlier.
And she knew that even soldiers didn’t get canned meat every day. Most of them still relied on those disgusting cockroach rations.
“It’s fine, Caroline,” Haroldson said before she could speak. “This one was a reward from

yesterday–didn’t cost me anything. Running into Raven today feels like fate. This can belongs
to him.”
Without waiting for approval, he popped it open and placed it in front of Raven.
Raven dove right in. His tongue swept once, and the can was empty.
When he finished, he looked up at Haroldson with bright black eyes, tail swishing so fast it stirred the air. The dog’s gaze practically said, “Human, I really like this one.”
Caroline sighed. She decided to let them be. This is how they get along, I guess.
Before the apocalypse, Raven had saved Haroldson’s life. The two had fought side by side to wipe out criminal factions.
Their bond ran deeper than she could interfere with.
Even a dog needed friends of his own.
And Raven wasn’t just any dog. His mutation had made him far smarter than the average animal.
Showing affection for him probably meant sharing food with someone he liked.
Once the two were done bonding, Caroline pulled out a small vial filled with blue liquid and handed it to Haroldson.
“Nelson made this,” she said. “It helps restore ability energy. Might come in handy in a fight. It’s still in testing, but it could save your life if things get bad.”
She passed the vial to him.
It was one of Nelson’s nearly finished prototypes–not perfect yet, but close.
Before she left, Nelson had given her three vials, asking her to test them during this trip and report back afterward so he could fine–tune the formula.
Caroline had already thought it through. Once this thing was perfected and mass–produced, it could be traded with the military or even with private organizations. It wasn’t some classified
secret.
For now, though, it was just a limited–edition prototype.
When Haroldson heard that, his eyes lit up. “Caroline, that’s incredible! Thank you! You probably don’t know my ability, right? Well… it eats up a ridiculous amount of energy! But it’s
