Chapter 111 The Trap on the Stairs

Caroline turned to Kay. Stay home for now. Don’t go out. They’ve got guns.

Kay didn’t argue. She just nodded; she knew how serious things were.

No need,Tyler said suddenly.

Caroline blinked. What?

Without another word, Tyler went back into his bedroom.

When he came out, he was holding a submachine gunsleek, deadly, and a whole lot more impressive than her little handgun.

I’ve got one,he said. Keep yours.

Caroline’s eyes narrowed. Who is this guy? He even had guns?

She glanced at the room he came out of and noticed he’d locked the door behind him.

Her gut told her there were more surprises hidden in that room.

Meanwhile, across the hall, Reese was panicking.

She clutched John’s arm. Maybe we should run! No one’s down there right now. No one will

see us.

My right eye’s been twitching all morning, she whispered, voice shaking. Something bad’s gonna happen. I can feel it.

From the moment Patricia’s crew entered the building, Caroline had been on high alert.

She knew they were armed. So she ran back inside, opened her storage space, and pulled out a bulletproof vest.

When Tyler saw her putting that on, he raised an eyebrow. Ms. Sinclair, you’re even more mysterious than I thought.

Caroline didn’t answer. She wanted to say the exact same thing to him.

Tyler just smirked, went back into his apartment, and returned with two more vests. He slipped one on and handed the other to Kay.

That’s when Caroline finally understood why, on the day he’d moved in, Tyler had left all his gym equipment outside.

His place was already full of better stuff. The weights were just taking up space.

Caroline’s plan was simple: she wanted Tyler and Kay to help her scare off whoever was coming, at least long enough to buy time.

Then, with a spark of mischief in her eyes, she grabbed a bucket of water and carried it to the stairwell.

She tipped it down the steps.

In seconds, the water froze solid in the near -30°F weather.

Patricia,” she muttered with a cold smile, hope you enjoy the little gift I made for you.

But Patricia was taking her sweet time.

The others, too cold to move around, stayed inside. The group gathered around the table, eating their Cajun boil.

After finishing their meal, Caroline pretended she was going back to her room to grab something. In truth, she slipped into her storage space and pulled out two small bags of dessert.

The calm before the storm didn’t make anyone too nervous.

After all, they had Raven.

Ever since his evolution, the dog could hear sounds from far away, acting as their early warning system.

Caroline couldn’t help but smirk when she thought about Patricia. The old woman must be in her seventies or eighties, climbing 66 floors step by step. She probably had to rest a dozen times on the way up. Just imagining it made Caroline feel satisfied.

About an hour later, Raven suddenly stood up, fur puffed, eyes fixed on the door.

A moment later came a clatter of noise from outsidemetal, footsteps, and a string of angry

curses.

Someone must’ve slipped on the ice and fallen down.

Caroline glanced at Kay and Tyler. They’re here.”

When they reached the door, the stairwell echoed with violent pounding.

Bang! Bang! Bang!

Then Patricia’s furious voice came through. Caroline, you wicked little brat! Open the door! Did you kill my grandson?!

Caroline looked at Kay and Tyler.

Tyler already had his gun ready. Kay held one too, though hers wasn’t loadedat least not yet.

Hot weapons are dangerous in untrained hands.

Still, with one person on each side of the door, they looked threatening enough.

Patricia’s rheumatism flared by the time they reached the top; she had to be carried the last stretch.

Gaylord had been hauling her up, but just when they were almost there, he slipped on the ice and tumbled down.

The sixfoottall man, built like a wall of muscle, came crashing down right on top of her. The fall nearly knocked the life out of her.

Even now, her chest throbbed so badly she could barely stand straight.

Then she noticed the puddle of water frozen along the stairs and nearly fainted from rage. That was no accidentit was a trap made for them.

Caroline, you nasty tramp! Are you trying to kill me? I’ll make you pay!she spat.

Caroline rested her hand on the sleek storagespace pistol. She peered through the peephole and found Patricia.

Then, she swung the door open and pressed the barrel against Patricia’s forehead without a word.
