Caroline stared at the car key in front of her. It was bent out of shape and covered in dried blood. She frowned and didn’t take it. Instead, she looked up at Tyler.

Since she wasn’t going to accept it, Tyler didn’t argue. He just slipped the key back into his pocket. “I’ll get you another car,” he said flatly.

Caroline crossed her arms; she narrowed her eyes and glared at him. “It’s not just the car. What about everything inside it? Patricia promised that was all mine.”

Tyler froze mid–turn. “I’ll throw in a gun.”

“And the bullets?” Caroline pressed, her tone calm but sharp.

“Twelve rounds,” Tyler replied, brows tightening.

“Anything else?” she asked again.

He puckered his lips. “Two grenades.”

“That’s it?” Caroline asked, raising an eyebrow and crossing her arms.

“Some supplies got blown up. I didn’t check everything,” he muttered.

Caroline nodded once. “Fine.”

When Tyler left, it was clear he hated every second of it. Even a man with his wealth looked pained giving up that much.

Later, he quietly dropped off a box at Caroline’s door: a gun, twelve bullets, two grenades, and a crate of mixed goods. He didn’t even knock for long, just a quick tap before walking away.

Caroline opened the door and carried everything inside.

She couldn’t help but smile a little. The deal she made with Patricia had turned out better than expected.

She’d guessed there were real weapons in that car, and she’d been right.

Now she wasn’t short on supplies, but the new firepower thrilled her.

Still, when she looked at everything laid out on the floor, her smile faded. What had Tyler gone through to waste so many bullets and grenades? And to lose an entire vehicle?

The blood on that car key flashed in her mind, and for a moment she pictured Patricia’s face.

Caroline gave a cold snort and decided to keep it to herself. There was no point barging in to question Tyler.

After all, it was his family’s mess.

That night, she slept peacefully for the first time in a long while.

Reese and Jonathan were both dead. The old grudge from her past life was finally settled.

The thought made her want to laugh in her sleep.

The next morning, Caroline woke up to another drop in temperature.

While the group exercised outside, Kay rubbed her arms and shivered. “Why is it so cold?”

Caroline pulled out a thermometer and left it outside for a bit. When she checked, the temperature had dropped to nearly -30°F.

“We should start collecting furniture from this building and the one next door,” Tyler suggested. “Anything that can burn–bring it upstairs.”

They had already gathered a lot of wooden furniture from nearby floors, but the colder it got, the faster they burned through fuel.

Caroline had plenty of firewood stored away, but she wasn’t about to let anyone find out about her secret storage space.

A few days ago, Kay had gone downstairs to Freya’s place and brought back her generator. Now everyone on the 66th floor had one of their own.

They’d also gathered every heater, electric blanket, and heating pad they could find from nearby floors.

But no matter how many electric gadgets they collected, none of them worked as well as a wood–burning stove.

After a quick discussion, everyone grabbed their gear and decided to head out for the day’s scavenging trip.

Raven, meanwhile, stayed behind to guard the stairwell.

Ever since the temperature dropped again, Raven’s fur has grown even thicker.

Now the dog was about the size of a horse. If you reached into his fur, your hand would sink deep before you even touched the skin–just soft, fluffy warmth everywhere.

Of course, that also meant his appetite had skyrocketed.

Caroline had done the math once. Raven ate as much as 60 Jets—or 10 of her.

The thought made her chest tighten.

Sure, she had plenty of supplies stored, and the farm kept producing food, but at this rate? Not for long.

After making sure Raven understood his duty, Caroline and the others went downstairs.

The nearest floors were already stripped clean–every usable thing had long been taken.

So they kept going down.

By the time they reached the 40th floor, they saw that every door had been forced open, and the apartments inside were completely looted.

“It’s those from the 48th floor,” Kay said quietly.

Earlier, they had passed the 48th floor and noticed it looked a lot like their own–reinforced doors at the stairwell, strong locks, and extra barriers.

Caroline didn’t blame them.

If they can make some prepare to survive the apocalypse, so can they.

“Let’s keep going,” she said.

But as they moved lower, they realized something shocking. Every usable item, every stove, and every stick of firewood in the entire building was gone. Someone had cleaned the place out completely.
