Harry sat up straight. “Damn, you mean Tyler–the one who messed up my family?”

Gaylord didn’t answer. He wasn’t into rich–people gossip. Before the apocalypse, he had been a martial arts academy coach. After the world fell apart, he had no choice but to join the Lowlands.
“You’re telling me no one has figured out how my grandma disappeared? And Jonathan’s body still hasn’t been found?” Harry asked.
Gaylord nodded slowly.
He and the others had stayed behind to punish Reese. When they returned to base, they learned Patricia was missing. Days had passed, and there was still no trace of her or her group. Even their car was gone.
They had only heard that a half–finished building had collapsed that day. They didn’t know if it was from acid rain corrosion or if it had something to do with Patricia’s disappearance.
One young man who had been sent by Patricia to find a shelter address had survived. But the bodyguards who had traveled in the two cars with Patricia were all gone.
“Caroline and Tyler are interesting,” Harry said at last. He put his feet up on the front seat and smoked. After a moment, he laughed, “I should thank them, really. If my grandma and Jonathan hadn’t died, I wouldn’t be running the Lowlands now. Ha.”
Niko sat in the jeep, comforting a woman wrapped in blankets. She looked terrified.
“Don’t worry,” Niko said softly. “The government won’t abandon you. Our base on the hill is more complete now. If you follow orders and pull your weight, you can survive there.”
The woman nodded, still sobbing. She looked pitiful.
“There … there isn’t a single good person in that building. My husband was killed by them! Especially those on the 66th floor. And that Caroline–she’s a monster!” she cried, grabbing Niko’s arm.
Niko frowned at first. But after hearing her story and seeing how shaken she was, he felt pity and didn’t pull away her thin hand.
“Captain Richter, they have guns! I saw guns in their hands! They’re raiders. Maybe they

agreed to let you use the building only so they could kill everyone and steal your supplies. You must be careful!” she sobbed.
“You should send men to kill them and take back our supplies. Those supplies could save a lot of people!” Her voice grew louder and more desperate. Her grip tightened.
The blanket fell from her head, and Niko finally saw her face. She was thin and full of hatred. It was Erica.
After burning Charlie’s body, Erica had fallen into despair. But she didn’t want to die. She even thought about raiding Building B for supplies.
Then she heard loudspeakers below. She believed the government was coming to save people. But she didn’t go out at once. The last days had made her wary.
She wrapped herself in layers and watched Caroline, Zach, and the others from the shadows. She focused on a tall man in uniform who smiled gently. She could tell he was the one in charge. He seemed like a real, righteous soldier.
Finally, she tore off some clothing and, shivering in the wind, walked to the jeep and knelt in front of Niko, crying. “Please save me. Take me away. I know the building’s secrets. I don’t want more people to die. Take me with you. I’ll be useful.”
So Erica got into Niko’s jeep. Everyone thought she was dead. No one knew she had managed to get a ride with Niko.
Niko let go of her hand but stayed gentle. He told her to calm down and said he would look into everything she said. Then he asked a serious question. “You said the people on the 66th floor have guns. Is that true?”
Erica felt a surge of joy. She had known the government cared about weapons.
But she hadn’t told the truth. She didn’t know whether the 66th floor had guns. She had made
