“Yell again, and the next bullet goes through your head. Tyler moved his gun to the woman’s forehead. “Talk. What’s really going on?”
Scared out of her mind, the woman finally started talking.
As it turned out, the kid wasn’t hers at all.
He was an orphan, and his parents had died long ago..
The woman had dragged the boy up to the 66th floor, hoping to stir up trouble and get something out of it.
To make the boy cooperate, she’d pinched his arms and legs so hard that they turned purple.
When Caroline lifted the boy’s coat she could see big bruises all over his body.
“What a piece of trash,” Caroline said coldly.
The woman gritted her teeth, not scared of Caroline, and muttered, “At this point, who cares about right or wrong? The kind ones are all dead anyway.”
That was probably how a lot of people thought after the apocalyse started.
But going after an orphan like that? That was just heartless.
The woman glared at Caroline and Tyler, then fixed her eyes on Caroline. “You’re no better! You just use your pretty face to cling to a man for safety! You’re the same kind of slut as Freya from the shelter. You’re disgusting!”
Tyler stepped forward, but Caroline stopped him.
She looked at the boy beside her. “Close your eyes.”
The boy didn’t understand at first, but when he saw Caroline’s sharp gaze, he obeyed. He walked to the side, turned his back, and covered his eyes tightly.
The woman seemed to realize what was about to happen and tried to run.
Too late.
Bang! The gun fired, and the woman dropped, a bullet through her head.

Tyler smiled at Caroline. “Nice shot.”
Caroline said nothing, just slid the gun back into her waistband.
She had noticed something strange earlier–the boy’s walk looked odd.
Looking closer, she saw he had no toes. The front of his shoes was empty.
That was why he limped.
Then, from downstairs, a man came stomping up, shouting angrily, “Hannah! What’s taking so long? I still need that kid!”
When he reached the floor and saw what was happening, his legs gave out.
Caroline didn’t hesitate. She rushed forward, grabbed his arm, and demanded, “Hannah was your wife?”
The man nodded nervously.
Caroline then learned that the two were a couple.
They had found the orphaned boy long ago and “rescued” him, just so they could get extra food rations under his name.
But instead of caring for him, they beat him, starved him, and left him freezing without shoes. That was how he lost his toes.
And the limp? That wasn’t from the missing toes–they had broken his leg.
All to get pity from the soldiers and beg for more food.
Earlier today, Hannah Manning had tried the same trick again. She’d bruised the boy all over to make it look real.
But when the boy saw how clean and well–kept Caroline and Tyler looked, he finally got the courage to tell the truth–that Hannah wasn’t his mom.
The man, though, was just as rotten.
Secing his wife’s dead body, he realized he had messed with the wrong people.
He only emptied his pockets, begging for mercy, saying he’d never do it again.
He didn’t spare his wife a single glance.

Just then, footsteps echoed from downstairs,
The gunshots had drawn attention.
A few soldiers came running up. When they saw the man, one of them frowned and kicked him hard. “Keith, what did you pull the river:
It was clear from their tone that this guy, Keith Manning, already had a bad record with the military.
Seeing the soldiers, Keith quickly fell to his knees, pointing at Caroline and Tyler. “They killed. someone! You have to punish them”
“No, they saved me! Keith and Hannah are the bad ones!”
The boy, who had been standing by the wall with his eyes covered, finally spoke up.
He turned around, saw Hannah’s body, and looked terrified for a moment. Then that fear turned into deep, burning hatred.
He ran to the soldiers, crying and shouting everything that had happened.
“Officer, those two saved me! Keith and Hannah hurt me all the time. I was scared to tell anyone. My parents are gone. They said if I told you, they’d throw me outside to freeze. Please, you have to believe me!”
