Chapter 235 Don’t Kill Us

Caroline kept her pistol up, moving slowly. Her eyes scanned for any sign of movement from the wreck.

There was total silence.

With a crash that big and the car on fire, she expected people to be scrambling out.

But nobody had come out.

Were they all dead?

Caroline stayed on guard, bent low, and whispered in Raven’s ear.

His icy blue eyes flashed–he understood.

When they were about six feet away, Raven suddenly leaped up.

At the same moment, gunshots cracked from the car’s direction.

Bullets were aimed exactly where Caroline and Raven had been heading.

Clearly, the passengers weren’t dead. They’d been pretending, waiting for Caroline to walk up so they could open fire.

If she hadn’t been careful and hadn’t told Raven to jump onto the car roof as they got close, they’d probably be riddled with bullets.

Right now, Harry was trapped in the car. He was in bad shape.

The driver died when the car flipped. Only Harry and two bodyguards were left.

One of the bodyguards was badly hurt. Harry’s left arm was broken and sticking out, with blood everywhere.

He’d done some quick first aid, but he felt himself getting cold. Without real medical help, he’d

die.

The car was burning hot, metal searing to the touch, but he didn’t dare climb out.

Harry kept a piece of the rearview mirror and used it to watch Caroline from inside.

He’d planned it with the two bodyguards. As soon as Caroline came within three feet, they’d

open fire. Until then, they’d play dead and act like everyone inside was already gone.

Otherwise, they’d be finished for sure.

But Caroline was careful as hell.

When she was about six feet away, she had Raven leap up onto the car roof, and their shots missed.

Just as Harry was cursing her, something reached in from above through the window.

Before he could do anything, there was a deafening bang, and then everything went black.

In that last instant, his life flashed by.

All he could think was that a woman had killed him. Next time, he’d never underestimate a woman again.

Harry never realized his so–called smart move had caused his quick death.

The little mirror he clutched let him watch Caroline, but it also showed exactly where he was hiding.

She knew he was sitting in the front passenger spot, but she couldn’t tell exactly where his head was.

She and Raven were standing on the roof, so it was hard to judge.

Then, she spotted a few moonlit glints. Remembering how they had stayed in the car and seemed ready for her, she guessed Harry was using a mirror to watch behind him..

That was enough.

Using the mirror’s reflection, Caroline worked out where Harry’s head was in the passenger

seat.

She fired once and killed him.

After she took Harry down, Caroline and Raven dropped off the car.

She knew people still sat in the back–probably the bodyguards the Lowlands had hired.

“Everyone out.”

Caroline made a show of cocking her pistol so the click rang out.

The two bodyguards left inside looked terrified.

At her order, they tumbled out of the backseat, stumbling over each other.

The younger bodyguard had a massive burn across his chest. The bleeding had stopped, but he could hardly move.

“Please, don’t kill us! We’re just working for the Lowlands! We don’t want anything else to do

with them.”

The older one stuttered, shaking.

He held a case. “I–I’ve got Harry’s most important things here. He never went anywhere without it. Just take it. Please let me go.”

He dropped the silver case on the ground and kicked it toward Caroline.

She looked the case over. It was about two feet long and ten inches wide–pretty big. She had no idea what was inside.

A combination lock sealed it.

“What’s the code?” Caroline asked the older bodyguard.

She hadn’t planned to kill those two.

They were just mercenaries or street thugs getting paid by the Lowlands. They had no real grudge against her.

After tonight, the Lowlands were finished. They wouldn’t be coming after her again.
