The guy was fat enough that when Caroline kicked him, his whole body jiggled twice from the impact.
“Pift. Sell Raven? In your dreams. Filthy bastard, eating off the backs of butchered lives.”
Honestly, this counted as one of Caroline’s rare moments of compassion.
The horror show in this lab, the butchered mutant animals, and the innocent lives dissected for sport had genuinely shaken her.
She walked through the room slowly, gathering the mutant animal corpses into her storage space one by one.
There weren’t any living creatures left here. Almost everything had already been dissected or broken down.
From the looks of it, this lab had only recently been set up. They were still in the early stages, focused on mass dissections, trying to understand how mutant organs worked, how they changed.
And then, Raven suddenly bolted.
He leapt forward with explosive force, and Caroline followed at once. She saw him leap onto a large, solid metal crate, over two feet high and 15 feet wide. He pinned it down with his full weight, baring his teeth and growling furiously at whatever was inside.
The crate had several small air vents on top, with a heavy–duty lock fastened tightly across the front. Every other part of it was sealed shut, completely airtight.
It was thick and reinforced, clearly custom–built to contain whatever was inside.
Caroline instantly understood that there was something alive inside. And whatever it was, it was dangerous.
She hesitated, weighing her options. But before she could act, the crate suddenly began to shake violently beneath Raven’s paws. Raven grew in size instantly, expanding several times over just to keep the thing pinned down.
It worked for a moment. The shaking stopped, but then the thing inside switched tactics. It began slamming itself against the door, again and again, like it had gone completely rabid.
Once. Twice. Three times.

Caroline watched in disbelief as the thick, reinforced metal door began to bend
“Raven, back off!” she shouted.
Raven suddenly darted back to Caroline’s side.

Whatever was in that crate, Caroline could tell just by the sound of it, this thing was going to be a serious problem.
Without wasting a second, she pulled Raven into the storage space.
Thanks to the most recent upgrade, the storage space now let her see the outside world while inside.
And the moment they stepped in, the massive metal crate was blown open.
What came out left Caroline absolutely stunned.
“What the hell … ”
A massive golden python burst from the crate.
Its body was over three feet thick, and its length rivaled a semi–truck.
Atop its head sat a long, slender horn, over a foot in length, shimmering gold, beautiful in an eerie sort of way.
But part of that horn had snapped clean off, likely from when it slammed into the crate during its frenzy trying to escape.
Just imagining this thing coiled up inside that metal box made Caroline’s skin crawl.
What shocked her even more was what had been done to the creature.
Its entire body was riddled with syringes, dozens of them. Some had already injected their contents fully. Others were only halfway in, needles still lodged beneath its scales.
It was clear this snake had been heavily experimented on over time.
Suddenly, something clicked in Caroline’s memory. Back during the acid rain incident, she’d seen a golden python then too, but that one hadn’t had a horn. She wasn’t sure if this was the same snake or something even worse.
One thing was certain, this one looked far more dangerous.

As soon as it broke free, the python lunged straight toward the dead researcher’s body.
Within seconds, the python swallowed the man whole.

Caroline figured that bastard must’ve spent plenty of time torturing the creature, running experiment after experiment on it, so it was no surprise the snake held nothing but hatred for him.
The man’s spilled blood must have driven the golden python into a frenzy, its rage pushing it to smash its own horn just to break free from the crate.
After devouring him, the python lifted its massive head and slowly scanned the room, coiled muscles tense, eyes sharp and searching.
Those eyes, blood–red and intelligent, glowed with something more than animal instinct. And the two enormous fangs jutting from its mouth left no doubt, this thing was lethal.
Caroline could tell right away–it wasn’t just dangerous. It was thinking.
There was a calculating awareness in its gaze, a wariness that almost felt human.
Hidden safely inside her storage space, Caroline wasn’t too worried about it seeing her.
Just then, Jasper leapt onto her shoulder, fur puffed out with excitement.
“Caroline! That mutant monster looks delicious!” he said, licking his paw like he was already tasting it.
Caroline rolled her eyes. “Eat, eat, eat–that’s all you ever think about. Maybe I should just throw you out there and let the python have you.”
She sized up the situation again. If she were being honest, she couldn’t take that thing in a fight, not as she was now.
It was way too big. Standing against it would be suicide.
Besides, mutant creatures were built like tanks, thick hides, muscle–packed, some even had abilities. This golden python definitely wasn’t an ordinary one.
