Francis showed up with five or six soldiers and three big modified trucks–clearly ready to

haul a lot of stuff.

Caroline and Tyler sat in the Jeep Francis had arranged for them.

Their first stop was the food processing plant Caroline mentioned earlier.

“Wow, I didn’t expect a food factory to be so close,” Francis said, clicking his tongue and rubbing his chin like he was in pain.

Caroline could tell why. He was annoyed that he hadn’t found it first. If the army had discovered it on their own, they wouldn’t have had to share any rewards with her team.

But all the locations Caroline found in her Big Bro Supreme’s office were illegal sites, not registered anywhere.

So, of course the government had no record of them.

When they arrived, it was just as Caroline expected, the whole place was buried under snow. They only had a rough idea of where it was.

“It’s fine, we figured this would happen.”

A few minutes later, a loud rumbling echoed through the snow.

A huge excavator slowly rolled toward them and started digging, one scoop after another.

It didn’t stop until it reached the building’s rooftop.

Then, a few soldiers carefully found the edge of the roof, hooked up some ropes, and broke a window to climb inside.

Caroline had warned Francis ahead of time that there might be mutated animals inside and told everyone to be careful.

Francis waved his hand. “Don’t worry. The soldiers I brought aren’t cowards!”

The first soldier who went down came back quickly, looking excited. “Colonel, there are a bunch of machines down there–a whole canning production line. Commander Ball’s gonna be thrilled!”

He said he didn’t see any mutant cats, just signs that cats had lived there.

The storm must’ve been getting worse, so the cats probably realized the place would get buried and moved somewhere else.

When Francis heard there was stuff inside, he waved his hand. “Okay, let’s give this building a little brain surgery.”

Before anyone could ask what he meant, two soldiers moved forward under Francis’s command. They swiftly measured the roof with special tools and planted explosives in the middle.

Francis explained the explosive charges were carefully calculated beforehand, so everything was safe.

Sure enough, there was a huge explosion and the roof blew open.

But it only blasted a gap about ten feet wide and ten feet long–a pretty neat square.

It really did resemble a surgical cut on the building.

“Great! Have them start pulling stuff out,” Francis said.

He left two guys to clean up and said the army would send a team to empty out the production line equipment.

They left behind a big truck.

The rest of the team, plus the excavator, rumbled off to the next location.

The excavator was too slow to move on its own, so they loaded it onto a truck and towed it along.

Watching the whole process, Caroline couldn’t help giving Francis a thumbs–up. Talk about getting things done fast! His soldiers were quick, effective, and perfectly coordinated.

Next, Caroline followed them to the factory Tyler had mentioned.

It was farther away.

According to him, he’d found it by accident while out searching for supplies.

Francis sat in the passenger seat, sucking on a lollipop.

He got the lollipop from a friend’s little daughter.

He didn’t want it at first, but the kid insisted on stuffing it into his hand.

Earlier, he’d even tried to give it to Caroline, saying a grown man like him had no use for candy.

But Caroline wasn’t interested either, so she politely turned him down.

Francis probably got bored during the ride, so he finally just ate it himself.

Caroline figured the soldier driving next to Francis had some serious training, because he didn’t crack a smile or even look like he wanted to.

“Man, why can’t I ever get lucky like that? You just go out looking for supplies, and boom, you find a food factory. Next time you’re out searching for supplies, take me with you.”

Caroline ignored him completely.

Francis just kept rambling on his own.

Every now and then, Denton would toss a few words back, clearly interested in the conversation.

Who would have thought that Denton and Francis would hit it off so well on the drive?

Honestly, after a few days together, Caroline had realized something–Denton could get along with anyone. Literally anyone.
