Francis’s frown deepened even more. “That’s impossible. What on earth happened in the back area? We looked closely–three of the heads belonged to our own men stationed there. Could it be… a rebellion?”
Before Caroline could answer, a soldier came running up the stairs, gasping for breath. “Colonel Sutton! More heads just showed up downstairs!”
This time, there were over thirty of them.
“Colonel Sutton,” the soldier said, his voice shaking, “we went down to check … all our soldiers and the labor crew working in the rear area–they’re all dead!”
His eyes turned red as he spoke.
Hearing that, Francis’s face went pale. He hurriedly excused himself and rushed downstairs.
From above, Caroline leaned over the railing and looked down. Sure enough–two new rows of heads lined the snowy ground in front of the shelter.
Dark, frozen faces scattered across the white snow, looking like a field of graves.
The air was so cold it burned, but Francis still led a group out of the building to confirm it.
What he saw made his heart sink–every last one of the eight soldiers he had sent to the back area, along with the dozens of people working there, was dead. Not a single survivor.
“The rear area
…
something terrible’s happened there,” Francis said grimly, his jaw tight with rage.
He brought in the survivors from the shelter to identify the bodies. Each frozen face belonged to someone’s family.
Once everyone had been named, Francis and his men buried the victims beneath the snow and held a brief, silent farewell ceremony.
Aside from a few people still shouting for compensation, trying to take advantage of the chaos, most faces were blank and lifeless.
Since the apocalypse began, no one could even count how many people had died.
And now, the army had officially lowered the food rations.
Everyone could see what that meant–the army was running out of supplies.
So instead of mourning the dead, people started worrying about how they would survive the next few days.
All their grief had to be swallowed down.
Francis decided to go check the rear area himself.

Even though the blizzard outside was fierce and the cold was deadly, what had happened was far too strange to ignore.
Caroline had never heard of anything like this, not even in her previous life. No matter how much she thought about it, she couldn’t figure out the cause.
“Could it be a mutant?” she murmured.
That was the only explanation that made sense–but even then, something felt off.
In her past life, during this stage of the deep freeze, no humans had mutated yet–only animals.
Even after soaking in both acid rain and spirit spring water, she hadn’t shown any signs of mutation.
Francis left that day–and didn’t come back for three.
During those three days, Caroline stayed inside, curled up at home.
It was just too cold to go anywhere.
Compared to the chaos down in the shelter, the 66th floor was peaceful–almost comfortable.
When they had free time, Denton and Tyler would spar in the hallway.
Since both Caroline’s and Tyler’s apartments had their own heat sources, opening their doors filled the hallway with cozy warmth.
Sometimes, Caroline would lean against her doorway, watching the two of them practice.
Denton’s strength came from his flexibility and speed. He moved like a wildcat–sharp, fast, and unpredictable, always ready to strike with a playful edge.
Tyler was fast too, but Denton was faster, pulling off difficult moves with ease and throwing in sneaky, unexpected attacks.
Still, no matter how flashy Denton got, he almost always ended up caught or slammed to the ground by Tyler.
When Tyler trained him, he never went easy–each throw hit the floor hard, like tossing a sack of grain. As Denton liked to joke, “That’s his tough–love training–brutal, but kinda awesome.”
One time, Denton even wanted to spar with Caroline, but Tyler warned him from the side, “Watch out for her hands.”
Denton blinked. “What’s wrong with her hands?”
Tyler didn’t answer–he just gave Caroline a teasing look and said to Denton, “Good luck, you’ll need it.” Caroline instantly understood. He was mocking her for that one time she didn’t fight “by the book.”
