**Doomsday Rebirth 425: Exposed**
In the harsh reality of their existence, where every meal was a distant memory and survival was a daily battle, the former residents of the shelter—scavengers now—hadn’t tasted real meat in what felt like a lifetime. To them, the sight of canned meat was akin to discovering a long-lost treasure, more precious than the love of a father.
As Caroline and her group stealthily approached, they melted into the shadows, their movements fluid and practiced, as if they were preparing to don new identities. This was the plan they had meticulously crafted, and now they were ready to execute it.
Just as they were about to cross into the danger zone, a tall, imposing figure broke the silence that hung in the air like a heavy fog. His voice, deep and resonant, cut through the tension. “Hey, why’s William so quiet today? Is he hurt or something? You used to be the chattiest one!”
Denton, caught mid-imitation of William’s unique tone, froze in his tracks, his heart racing. William’s voice was distinct and difficult to replicate; the moment the tall man spoke, the group that had been inching forward halted, their eyes now fixed on Caroline and her companions with a mix of suspicion and curiosity.
“We’re all brothers here, so why go change clothes over there? Change them right here,” the tall man insisted, a hint of challenge in his tone. He seemed to sense something amiss, and his gaze sharpened.
Tyler leaned in closer to Caroline, lowering his voice to a near whisper, “He just crawled out of the corpse pile, covered in virus. William’s injured, so we will help him with the wound later.” His eyes darted nervously around, aware of the stakes.
Denton cleared his throat, the sound rough and jagged, a sign of his rising anxiety.
In the dim, flickering light, the group exchanged glances, a silent communication passing between them. The atmosphere was thick with unspoken words; no one dared to break the silence.
“All right, then change your clothes,” the tall man finally declared, nodding as he began to stride toward the pile of supplies stacked precariously nearby.
The others erupted into eager chatter, their voices a mix of excitement and nervousness. Yet Caroline could sense the tall man’s wariness; he was on edge, his eyes darting to track their every movement as if he were a predator observing prey.
Time was slipping away. They couldn’t afford to hesitate; any delay could expose their ruse. In that fleeting moment, Caroline and her group locked eyes and sprang into action, hearts pounding in synchrony.
Caroline’s attack radius was formidable, stretching about ten feet in all directions. With a surge of adrenaline, she unleashed her ability, and within the blink of an eye, three figures in the crowd collapsed, lifeless.
Denton and Tyler charged in as well, their powers not quite matching Caroline’s prowess, yet they fought valiantly, each managing to take down one enemy while Tyler inflicted a wound on another.
