**Doomsday Rebirth 462**
**Chapter 462: The Reverse Ambush**
He exhaled a heavy sigh, the weight of the moment pressing down on him as he deliberately disengaged the safety on his firearm. “Francis,” he began, his voice steady yet edged with urgency, “we’re both intelligent individuals, so let’s skip the pleasantries. Commander Zimmer’s initial command was straightforward: eliminate you without hesitation. However, after working alongside you for some time, I’ve come to recognize how effectively you’ve managed the shelter. My purpose here is to persuade you to reconsider. But if you refuse to listen, I will have no choice but to adhere to orders.”
He paused, the tension thickening in the air. “And don’t even entertain the thought of using your abilities against us. Our weapons have been specially modified. The instant they detect any energy fluctuations, they will fire automatically.”
As Philip concluded his warning, the soldiers flanking him clicked off the safeties of their weapons in unison.
It was evident they had arrived meticulously prepared for this confrontation.
All of them were soldiers, each endowed with unique abilities, and they were well aware of one another’s strengths and weaknesses, thanks to comprehensive records maintained for that very purpose.
The guns aimed at their heads had been designed specifically for scenarios like this, where every second counted, and hesitation could mean disaster.
A sneer curled on Francis’s lips, a hint of defiance in his demeanor. “Colonel Leonard, why don’t we find a more suitable location for this discussion? Even if your intention is to end my life, I refuse to witness bloodshed in front of Commander Ball’s grave! If it comes to that, make sure to lay me to rest beside him. He was the only one who ever treated me like family, after all. I’ve lived my whole life without parents.”
Philip’s brow furrowed, a flicker of conflict crossing his face.
Deep down, he genuinely didn’t want to carry out the order to kill Francis.
Yet, the tone in Francis’s voice suggested a willingness to drag everyone down with him if it came to that.
“Don’t worry,” Francis reassured him, taking a cautious step back. “I may have lost my will to live, but I won’t let my men perish needlessly. I won’t act recklessly.” He began to retreat, his men trailing behind him as they exited the confines of the cemetery.
Once in an open area, the dynamics shifted. Francis and his soldiers found themselves encircled, with Philip’s troops forming a tight perimeter, weapons drawn and ready.
Francis cast a sidelong glance at Colonel Philip, a sardonic smile gracing his features. “Oh, Colonel Leonard, since Commander Zimmer has ordered our surrender and intends to eliminate us if we resist, why not enlighten us about his vision for the future? How are we to know whether following him will lead to prosperity or starvation? This is the apocalypse we’re navigating, and resources are scarce. If his plan involves mistreatment, we might as well choose death now.”
Philip quickly outlined Andrew’s strategy for them, his tone clipped and authoritative.
In summary, Francis would be demoted, his soldiers dispersed and reassigned into Philip’s ranks, effectively dissolving Nathaniel’s forces.
“Rest assured, your pay and treatment will remain unchanged. You won’t face any mistreatment,” Philip continued, trying to persuade him further.
Yet it was painfully clear from Philip’s words that while Francis and his men might be treated adequately, the overarching management style would be a stark departure from Nathaniel’s approach.
Everything Andrew envisioned was aimed at consolidating his own power rather than safeguarding the people.
“And what if I refuse?” Francis inquired, his smile widening, a glimmer of mischief in his eyes.
“Francis, you know what that entails,” Philip replied, his finger tightening ever so slightly on the trigger, a warning laced within his tone.
