Using the physical boost granted by his ability to move through shadows, Ryan escaped quickly, slipping through a blind spot where no one could see him.

Caroline called for Raven and mounted him, scanning the area as they searched.

She feared Nelson might already be dead.

Ryan’s current state was a vessel of pure evil, capable of anything.

But then she remembered his last words before vanishing–he had said he would kill all of them.

That meant Nelson might still be alive, being held hostage.

Thinking along those lines, Caroline forced herself to calm down.

She reopened her Zero System.

Inside, only three abilities remained: Limited Foresight, I’m Your Mom, and Hope.

She had reset her Zero System three times today just to get these.

Her luck had been terrible. The abilities that appeared earlier were useless–things like summoning a bucket of water or temporarily making someone deaf.

Caroline selected Limited Foresight.

The counter read “1.” Once she used it, she would need to find Crow again.

“I want to see Ryan’s future,” she whispered.

Three visions flashed through her mind.

The first showed a cave. Nelson lay nearby, injured.

Beside him was darkness. A small puddle reflected dim light, and several snapped ropes lay on the ground. That must have been the ice Caroline had used to freeze Ryan–it had melted, and the ropes had broken.

The second vision was total blackness. Nothing but endless dark.

The third showed Ryan, eyes closed, a knife buried in his chest.

Caroline gritted her teeth and turned to Tyler and Denton. “I know where Ryan is. Nelson’s still alive. But there’s no need for everyone to go. Denton, you stay here and guard the villa. Tyler, you’re coming with me. Snow’s too big and stands out in the forest, so she stays. I’ll ride Raven with you.”

No one argued. Raven expanded in size but stopped short of Snow’s full form. He was still small enough not to draw attention. Tyler and Caroline barely fit on his back, their bodies pressed close together.

But neither of them felt even a hint of romance. Their focus was sharp. They leaned low against Raven’s body as he sped toward the forest.

Caroline had been here before and remembered the cave’s exact location.

This time, she directed Raven to circle around from behind and move silently as they neared

the entrance.

On the way, she briefed Tyler on the plan.

The plan was for Tyler to use his ability to probe inside the cave, but this time the target was Nelson.

He needed to rescue Nelson first, before worrying about Ryan.

Caroline told Tyler that once Nelson was safe, he was to ride Raven and take Nelson straight back to the villa.

“No arguments. I have my own plan. You just get him out,” Caroline said firmly.

Tyler frowned but didn’t protest. He trusted her strength and judgment.

He only needed to make sure Nelson was safely rescued.

They soon reached the area near the cave and crouched behind thick bushes, eyes locked on the entrance.

This was their biggest advantage–they already knew where Ryan was hiding.

Caroline remembered the system’s description of his ability, fast recovery in darkness.

She didn’t know if that included regenerating a severed foot, but one thing was certain–he would be stronger when they met again.
