**Chapter 498: The Man Who Cried Disaster**
Caroline and Tyler dashed through the gate, their hearts pounding with urgency as they entered the yard. The air was thick with tension, and they were both acutely aware of the weight of the moment.
To their astonishment, however, the familiar figures of Denton and Nelson were conspicuously absent.
Jet, standing nearby, had informed them that the two had ventured out in search of a housewarming gift for Caroline.
Tyler’s expression darkened instantly, his brows furrowing in concern. “Denton’s being reckless!” he exclaimed, his voice laced with frustration. “We haven’t even finished scouting the area! How could he possibly take Nelson with him? What if he can’t protect him on his own?”
Caroline felt a knot tighten in her stomach at his words, the urgency of the situation settling heavily upon her.
Without wasting a moment, she turned to Jet, her voice steady yet urgent. “You need to search the area. Try to locate them, quickly!”
Just as the tension in the room reached a fever pitch, a sudden, sharp knock echoed through the silence.
Both Caroline and Tyler sprang into action, their senses heightened. Denton and Nelson had keys; they wouldn’t be knocking.
This meant that whoever was outside was not one of them.
As they exchanged worried glances, the knocking intensified, becoming frantic and desperate.
Then, a man’s panicked voice broke through the din, pleading, “Please! Open the door! Help me! I’m begging you, let me in!”
Neither Caroline nor Tyler uttered a word. They remained eerily silent, their minds racing as they contemplated the implications of this unexpected visitor.
The area was relatively isolated, so how had this man found his way here?
The mobile base hadn’t triggered any alerts, which could indicate that the man was harmless—or perhaps he possessed some ability that concealed his true intentions.
“Please, open up! I’m begging you! The insect disaster is coming! Those things are coming down the mountain! Please, I’m begging you!”
His voice quivered with terror, each word punctuated by the frantic pounding of his fists against the door.
Caroline and Tyler exchanged a glance, their minds racing. Insect disaster? What could that possibly mean?
Suddenly, the man outside let out a blood-curdling scream that sent chills down their spines, as if he had been attacked. His voice was filled with pure agony.
“Help me! Please! I’m begging you! Ahhh—bugs! So many bugs! The insect disaster is here!”
His cries were laced with panic, and at that moment, Caroline and Tyler felt the ground beneath them begin to tremble ominously.
It was as if something colossal—a swarm of creatures—was barreling toward them.
The air was alive with the chaotic sounds of flapping wings—thud-thud, thud-thud.
“We have to find Denton and Nelson,” Caroline said, her voice grave and resolute.
Whatever was out there was not merely dangerous; it was lethal.
